"A Day Without Immigrants", . . .

. . . leads to Immigrants Without Jobs.

Apparently Friday was "A Day Without Immigrants", a nationwide protest and boycott that took place on February 16, 2017 to demonstrate the importance of immigration, and to protest President Donald Trump's plans to build a border wall and to potentially deport millions of illegal immigrants. The strike called for immigrants not to go to work, to avoid spending money, and keep children home from school, . . . i.e. a day of avoiding employment, not participating in commerce, and denying oneself education.

So, hey, . . . what could go wrong ?

Well as KTUL - ABC, Tulsa reports 12 employees of the "I Don’t Care Bar and Grill" in Catoosa, Oklahoma went along with the plan, . . . and subsequently received termination notices from their employer.
"Restaurant owner Bill McNally [explained] he has a 'zero tolerance policy for no show/no call incidents and the 12 employees violated that policy.' "

At least they aren't alone.
__NewsChannel5-Nashville reports "18 People Fired After Participating In "A Day Without Immigrants" from Bradley Coatings in Nolensville, Tennessee.
__KHOU - Houston reports "21 workers fired for taking part in 'Day Without Immigrants' " from Encore Boat Builders in Lexington, South Carolina.

A quick Googling reveals similar loss of employment in Baltimore, Denver, . . . why, heck fire !, . . . all over the Country.

DonDiego supposes it is a lesson worth learning: align oneself with anarchist agitators and there may well be unanticipated practical consequences.

The good news is there are plenty of new job openings all over the Country for those seeking employment.

For the record, DonDiego noticed no disruptions on the Day Without Immigrants up heh' in Appalachia. He hopes no readers were inconvenienced.
Ask Alabama what happens when you have a workforce without immigrants. They found out the hard way in 2011 when their thoughtful government passed legislation that booted them out of the state. It sure made the Confederate flag waivers happy...but as for the farmers? Not so much.

Crops rotted in the fields with nobody to tend them

Alabama has since rolled back their common sense approach to illegal immigration enforcement. Turns out there wasn't much sense to it.
This was actually on Thursday. The purpose of the organizers was to show the financial impact of immigrants on the local economy. My friends who own restaurants said business was down 20 to 30 percent.
I'll respond as related to Vegas, a highly populated illegal and legal immigrant population, it did not effect me in the least. I do shop at the Mexican mart, but did not happen to on this day. Indeed, I didn't even know about the "movement" until the 11pm news. So again, my day went unimpacted by this walkout. A lot of places will be losing my business for this crap. If you don't want my business, I will gladly take my business where it is wanted. I've always meant to check out some of the Chinese grocers. Just because. I like to give business to smaller places. I like the different products, lower prices, different clients, etc.

I find it crazy that people are aiding and abetting breaking the law. My grandparents names are on the Ellis island wall...legal immigrants. Is anyone actually a history buff or taken the tour, you realize the building is a holding tank and hospital for this entering the country to see if they met the criterion to stay? And just to be clear, my other grandparents are Native American. So I am both An immigrant and according to the history books a native

We have been at war for many years now, I have European friends from first world countries that tell me stories from their parents about bombs on the front lawn. Guess what.....my American naive and sheltered self is good with that. We have no understanding of actual war because we have been so blessed for it not to be at our front door.

But in general, breaking the law by common sense should be frowned upon.

What does this have to do with "A Day Without Immigrants" ?

DonDiego supposes those who lost their jobs for taking a day off without good cause were happy Mexican flag wavers, . . . until they were told to stay home.

No Government passed any legislation to boot anybody anywhere; they lost their jobs all on their own. DonDiego supposes they were happy to take a day off just to "show someone" how important they are; that's what the organizers told them.

Actions have consequences.
Here is hoping those businesses get visited by the labor department to find out what those people's immigration status was, and if the company was paying taxes on them.
One of my staff members is married to an immigrant so I am somewhat familiar with this. Actually organizers widely told people to not blow off work that they should coordinate with their bosses if they were going to participate in these activities. That they would risk losing their jobs if they are a no show. These are outliers.

There are lots of stories on the internet about immigrants working double time the day before to take a day off or some employers closing shop (Jose Andres, for example) to show support.

My staff member's husband went to work on Thursday because he needed the money.
I know dozens of legal immigrants and at least three people in the process now that has cost many thousands of dollars and separated spouses. I have no sympathy for people who take the law into their own hands. And yes, I have met a family from Cambodia that spent 11 years in a refugee camp and both of the fathers were leaders in the military for their country. Every person and family have hardships, immigrant or not immigrant. We do what we have to do within the law for our families. I have been blessed to have met some very beautiful people over the years from around the world with many beautiful and heartbreaking stories. And if people from Mexico weren't coming over without permission we'd be able to take in many more refugees and have resources available to them. Let alone protecting our borders during war time from unknown people.
So you want to throw out Christian refugees from the most violent country on the continent in order to make room for non-Christian refugees from around the world?
That seems amazingly thought out.
I don't mind peaceful protests, but I have bills to pay. I have to go to work even when I disagree with something. but isn't that how it works -- I work 2 jobs so that the other half can lay around on the couch and collect handouts.
