Recovering from ankle surgery

Crutches suck! If you're wearing a cast, check out a knee scooter. I took mine to Vegas last spring with a broken foot and had no problems getting around. Mine even had a front basket for carrying my winnings....
Boiler, I am sure I am this isn’t 100% medically accurate, but as I understand it the doctor said I was having two procedures. A procedure to remove a large bump (Haglund’s deformity) that was keeping me from wearing shoes on my right foot other than flip flops and then I had the AT detached, lengthened and reattached. I can’t put any weight on it for eight weeks and it is driving me nuts less than ten days in. The doctor canceled my Monday morning appointment as he called in sick, and now I have to wait until Friday morning for the surgical dressing to come off and see if I injured it where it will have to be surgically repaired. I never realized how little you can do when both of your hands need to be on crutches all of the time. The massive plastic boot makes it hard to hold my injured foot completely off the ground and balance on the crutches. I am calling and requesting a wheel chair tomorrow as I think it will actually be easier to get around on that. Currently, I spend 90% of my time sleeping.
Sounds like you would be best off with a knee scooter. as melonhead suggested.
or we can get out some splints and screw 'em to your leg bones and make a bit of a pogo stick.....
There are shoes other than flip-flops?

Sorry to hear about all the pain you're dealing with. Hope you are able to get a wheelchair to get around better and that your medical treatments and PT go well. That really sucks.
Mally, that sucks and I know what you're going through. In my college years I had a major knee injury with a full ACL tear, 60% PCL tear, and a fully torn MCL. That lead to two reconstruction surgeries, two scopes, and two micro fracture surgeries...............all from 1979-1989. In 2006 I had a full knee replacement, followed by a staph infection in the bone 5 months later. This lead to an unsuccessful emergency surgery attempt to kill the bug. Eventually, they removed the knee joint for 11 weeks, and then put in new hardware. I also had two 6 week stints with a "pick line" and IV drips each day. I was pretty much a mess for almost a year.

In the old days, the time on crutches was much longer than today and I've spent a combined 14 months of my life on crutches. I was good on crutches, but then again I was a younger man then. I wouldn't want to do it again. You'll get better on the crutches if you get out and about regularly.

Feel better
I wanted to thank everyone for all of their support. I got my surgical wrap off today and the doctor said it looks good. Five more weeks of non-load bearing, and I should be good. I also got my knee scooter (technically it is called a knee caddy). I resisted because it looks odd, but boy do they work well. My mobility is so much better than on the crutches as I have a basket to carry things in and the use of a free hand when I am moving. It was melonhead’s post that finally made me pull the trigger, so thank you.

I still can’t drive which is a bummer, but I at least can move all over the house without having someone have to follow me with my stuff or wait for someone to fetch me a drink.

CowboyKell, I do love flip flops, but Midwestern winters and flip flops aren’t a good fit. Overall, I am in less pain even with the surgical incision than I was prior to the surgery, so I am glad I had it. The boney mass had gotten so big the tendon had gone tight. I didn’t realize how much it hurt until after the surgery and that tightness was gone.

Mally, hang in there and keep getting better!
Ouch! So sorry that happened to you. Plus those damned pain killers will constipate ya.

Hope all continues to go well.
I just got home from vacation yesterday, so catching up on the news.
Be well.
