IMHO...not a new thing just a new moniker. Tapas Bar....drinks and appetizers.
Hell, way back in the '80's we used to walk to a local restaurant/bar for "Happy Hour"...1/2 price drinks and free apps...stuffed mushrooms, stuffed potato skins, an array of olives, breads, salami,pepperoni, cheese,nuts,pizza.

Let me give you NON-tapas people a sigh of relief.
Essentially.... "tapas" is the Spanish word for "appetizers"
So.... so if you want beer and wings.... in Spain THAT would be considered beer and "tapas".

Also...Yes, it's the new "hip" thing to go for "tapas". (Some marketing genius just called their "appies" a 'cool' new name and all of the high society types bought in.)

P.S. Appetizer "A" cost $3.00 ..... if you call it "tapas" you can now charge $4+

Bottom, BOTTOM line .... tapas = appetizers
