Retired and in Vegas?

For those of you who have retired, how many have moved to Vegas for their twilight years? And how many have increased their visits due to lots of free time, or decreased visits due to lack of spendable cash?

This "gonna retire soon" gal would love to know....
I used to be a twice, maybe three time a year visitor. After retiring I probably go to Vegas 5 or 6 times a year. My wife is still working, probably more than ever. One or two trips a year are work related for her. The lengths of our, or sometimes just my, trips are anywhere from overnight to a week long.
I thought about until I realized that it's too hot and too cold.
IT'S A DESERT CLIMATE.
It would have been Pahump. Live and die in a mobile home? No.
'Vegas? Maybe. Taxes are much lower than Seattle. Hey,the revenue from gaming pays for a lot of this that I pay for, here.
Rockin' Rick moved there for the weather,I'll guess.
Well, better that what they had to endure.
Lotsa reasons to move/retire there.
A few more resons?
B&O tax is minimal.
Property taxes are minimal.
Great schools and libraries and cultural arts.

If you gamble, don't live here. If you live here, don't gamble. QED.
edit: doubled up

My folks moved to Florida when they first retired. Couldn't stand it -- too old and slow down there. So they moved to LV for about 15 years. They loved it. There was always something going on.

For the final two or three years they lived there, Dad's gambling was mostly going over to GVR, betting on the ponies, and having a couple of beers. They've been back in FL for four years now (finally qualified for the "old and slow"). They did well when selling their home in LV.
Our plans were to retire and move to Las Vegas in 2000 and as we both look back glad we are glad we never follow through with our plans. We have visited Las Vegas 6 times per year for every year since retirement (we have air purchased for our first three trips this year). As we look at it now Las Vegas is a great place to visit but it is not a place for us to live (some people it is ideal place to retire). There are just too many other casinos we can enjoy and have fun. Las Vegas is lots of fun, lots excitement and plenty of entertainment--good food (not great) unless to go gourmet and that can only last a short time and you tire of it. No glad we visit and we enjoy our trips.
I think I'd pick Reno over Vegas to live - especially now that its becoming a satellite for Silicon Valley. You get the cheap cost of living plus an actual community of locals that aren't just catering to tourists.
Connie & I used to talk about buying a condo in Vegas; then prices went thru the roof. After that the whole real estate market collapsed and we were glad we hadn't bought. Now I think I'd just prefer coming to Vegas when we want as a vacation (and I'll retire in a couple of years so we should be able to go whenever we wish and the airfare and room comps are good.)

The other thing I wonder about is the ongoing drought in the west - what's going to happen to the water supply for Vegas and what will that mean for the people that live there, much less tourism? I would hope things would turn around before it gets too dire, but you can't count on that. One more reason to reconsider moving there.

We have an apartment we really like in the Twin Cities (MN) and I enjoy long-distance driving, so one of the first things I'd like to do when I retire is a big driving trip - no set destination or timeframe, just head west and see what happens. I would expect we'll spend a couple weeks in Vegas during that driving trip.

Otherwise, we've been considering buying a cabin on a lake by Siren Wisconsin - a really beautiful area not too far from us. We'd probably be more inclined to do that instead of a move to Vegas. Or we may just stay where we are. We like it here, and since I don't have to shovel when it snows, I have no issues with winter (kind of like it, actually.)
There are many pros and cons moving to Vegas for retirement and otherwise. I have friends on both sides of the fence.
My best friend and wife retired from here (Seattle) in the late nineties. Prior to that they had spent many trips to LV and truly loved it. I took a couple of home scouting trips with them (including a little golf) and they found nice place. Before they made their decision the three of us had many discussions regarding them moving to LV. The only concrete con I gave was moving to their favorite vaca destination. Gambling and family were not problems. They moved down in '98 and haven't looked back for a minute.

On the other hand, I know couple that retired there and moved back in a year. The hot weather that was so much nicer than home for 4-5 days two or three times year was not fun when it was May-Sept.
Another friend transferred to LV and loved the weather, the entertainment and cheap food. He also found out how much he loved VP! He moved back after a couple of years.

The upshot is that liked any long distance move, you need to realistically weigh all the pros and cons. !0-15 Years ago I was sure to retire there. Friends and family swayed my decision though. It would mean spending a lot of time with my best bud, but, not having an unlimited travel budget that I wouldn't see a lot of other friends and family more than a couple of times a year. I decided that traveling to see Bob and Sue was the better choice. That's what it comes to is choice.

Good Luck!

The locals do well for food. It's NOT expensive to live in 'Vegas!
Taxes are great, food is good, being a local is good but it was the weather that swayed my decision.Cheap housing!
I will stay in Seattle and just deposit my cash in Las Vegas twice yearly, eagerly.
PJ will let us know if their decision to move there was a good one.(Great T.R.)

It's been said more than once: If you live there, don't gamble......
