Riot Insurance

Cleveland's Board of Control voted — reportedly "without discussion," according to Cleveland.com — to approve the $9.5 million purchase of a $50 million "protest" insurance policy from AON Risk Services Northeast, to protect the city from claims related to its hosting of the Republican National Convention (RNC) from July 18-21.

After a sixth day of protests in Philadelphia over police brutality, police Commissioner Richard Ross said the city’s activists have always protested peacefully, and he expects nothing different either now or during the Democratic National Convention.

Still, the city will be ready if problems arise: Officials agreed to pay $1.2 million for “lawsuit liability” insurance — more commonly known as riot or protest insurance — to cover the city for up to $5 million in potential claims for officers’ “errors and omissions while performing their professional duties” from July 15 to 30, mayoral spokesman Mike Dunn said.

DonDiego supposes the City Fathers of Philadelphia may regret their frugality in purchasing only $5-million of coverage.
I suspect it will be Cleveland that comes up short. The Promise Keepers, Bikers For Trump and the New Blank Panthers are all promising to bring their guns. The leader of Bikers For Trump told CNN the streets around the GOP convention could turn into the O.K. Corral
I've been getting emails from Bikers for Trump for months. The projected number of bikers went from tens of thousands to as many as ten thousand to thousands to "many". Now the rally has been canceled. The organizer, who I know nothing about is quoted as saying the Democratic Administration refused to issue a permit to him.
In today's Washington Post, he is quoted again and the city states no permit was issued because no permit is needed.

What I find hilarious is doc Savage warning that Hillary wants to take away everyone's gun while simultaneously demanding the Black Lives Matters protestors be disarmed.
I haven't heard from the NRA on the rights of the New Black Panthers to openly carry their legal guns. Whats up with that?
How come poor old DonDiego didn't know Ohio was an open carry state ?

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland police officials on Wednesday encouraged demonstrators not to carry firearms outside next week's Republican National Convention, but said those who do will be watched closely by officers around downtown.

While the U.S. Secret Service banned a host of items, including firearms, in the area surrounding Quicken Loans Arena where the convention will be held, Ohio law permits people to carry pistols, long guns and assault rifles in public, including during demonstrations outside the convention.

Chief Calvin Williams told cleveland.com reporters and editors Wednesday morning that he would rather people leave their guns at home, instead of bringing them to protests.

"There will be enough law enforcement officers to take care of whatever happens," Williams said.

It's nice to see the Police Chief would rather folks left their firearms at home, instead of bringing them to protests. Good luck with that !

I'm not an insurance expert but spending 20% of the policy value to buy the policy seems awfully expensive to me. Cleveland thinks there is a greater than 20% chance of $50M in damage?

What constitutes "damage" is the reason. The policy covers "lawsuit liability" which can add up pretty quickly if violence breaks out and the police are found negligent.

Poor old DonDiego supposes the predictive models for such events are likely not very precise, so the insurer charges what he opines is a high price. Given the present state of the nation, poor old DonDiego won't be surprised if there's sufficient numbers of significantly angry protestors to result in a loss to the insurance company.
I wonder if Clint Eastwood's chair is going to make an appearance this time?
Is it too late for Cleveland to bail on the GOP convention? Or are there contractual obligations?

Yes, I'm sure that's the case. One article I read said they were expecting up to 50,000 protesters. I guess if they get more than that they are really screwed. The protesters won't be allowed to bring tennis balls, squirt guns, glass bottles, knives and a variety of other household items, but by golly, they can bring as many real guns as they want.
