RIP x 3

They say these happen in 3s. This time the group is closely related to the extreme. Not only were they from the same field (sports), but were the same age (83).

RIP Ernie Banks, Billy Casper, and Dean Smith.
At least 2 of them got to win Championships in their careers. The other one never had a chance to do so.
It seem as though Billy Casper is the forgotten star. He won 51 PGA tournaments including 7 majors (1 masters, 2 US Opens, 1 British Open, 2 PGA Championships). That's quite special. Billy also played on 8 Ryder Cup teams.
I was fortunate enough to see Ernie play maybe ten or twelve times, although I believe he retired when I was about 12 or 13 years old. I don't believe that I ever saw him play shortstop, but instead only first base.

Four: Charlie Sifford.
Five: Ed Sabol.
Sic: Doolittle Raider Edward Saylor
Seven: Joseph Langdell, USNR, last Arizona survivor
Etc.

Add: Buffalo Bill won three majors.
As of Oct 2014, there were 14 survivors.

Since the site hasn't been updated since Oct, the living list may be a bit smaller.

Mr. Langdell was the oldest living surviving crew member of the Arizona.
I have never bought the "3X" argument.
