No a GM plant with a govt subsidy

This is not a political comment but a weak attempt at sarcasm

well garthman there are indeed MANY instances of when unions got greedy and killed their companies. My personal, first hand experience, was in the airline industry when the unions literally put Eastern out of business when the company struggled with deregulation and the unions would not make concessions. the unions not only killed Eastern, but they kept Frank Borman from being a cabinet member or maybe even president himself one day. but these are the exceptions to what Im talking about. union organization allows management to manage without a hodgepodge of different contracts, workrules, etc. to keep different multitudes of employees happy.

if you work for a non union company and you have individual and separate contracts for a multitude of workers you have other problems... why does Sam get paid more than me? Why does Charlie get extra vacation? Why does Sara get an assistant? Why does Martha get that child care allowance and Kathy doesn't? Thats the point Im making.
I can't say that I have really run into those type of problems. Most people I have dealt with in a non-union workplace are fully aware why they get the pay rate they do and the benefits they do. They usually know the people with the most years put in get more pay and vacation. They usually know the higher the job and the more responsibility a job holds that the person may need an assistant or more help. Paying people the same isn't the answer. That is saying that all people work equally and that is simply not true. That can cause the same type of problems that you just mentioned about non-unions. People don't put in the same equal amount of work as everyone else. Some people work harder, have better work ethics, have more experience, etc etc.... Those type of people usually deserve a higher rate of pay. Just my personal experience that there are a good amount of union workers who get "comfortable" with their job because they know the type of protection a union brings for them.

Obviously, we can blame labor unions for a lot of our problems. The irresponsible way that the labor unions ran Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Citibank, JP Morgan, et al, led directly to the loss of six million jobs, the crashing of the housing market, and the tanking of our economy, especially in Las Vegas.

Yep, let's blame the unions.
What in the hell happened to this thread? Never mind, please don't answer that. Anyway, I am sorry to see Sahara close from an employee standpoint. From a personal standpoint, I found it to be depressing in recent years ala the Riviera.

It's called greed. No one is blaming the unions for everything that has happened...
I went to the Sahara last night...I haven't been in quite a while but that hotel was my old stomping grounds when I was 19-22 years old. For that reason we decided to stop by and play some $1 blackjack and $5 craps and drink poorly made drinks and reminisce on old times.

It was all in all a good night and it was good to see the old casino again. The dealers were saying that it is still scheduled to be shut down May16th and that it will be closed for 2 years while remodeling etc. It is a great location and it has so much potential. I hope they keep the old place going with a new look and updated business plan. I love old Vegas. STOP tearing all the old Casinos down!

From my almost 17 years as a union member, I can tell you where the deadwood lies. In the company I work for you'll find a most of it in management (non-union), and the higher you go up in the company the more deadwood you'll find. Our "deadest piece of wood" is the CEO.
Thanks for posting that LVrealestatehelp... and if the place is shut down for two years for remodeling I can almost guarantee you that this piece of "old Vegas" will look just like "new Vegas" when it reopens.
