Sam's Town-Day 1

We never seem to leave for Vegas on time...at least not on my time schedule...ever since we stopped leaving at 4 am. When I left her in the morning at 9:00 am I thought I'd run my errands and by the time I'd be back she'd be done with her shower and ready to roll. Her phone call to me telling me she just got out of the shower was a very good sign. Boy was I wrong.

Stopped to put gas in the car, returned my redbox movies, and headed over to the Farmers Market in Vista to pick up the flowers that she wanted for the suite. I wondered what she was going to do with the flowers when we moved from ST to the Silverton. That was he problem...I just had to make the purchase. So I picked out a bunch of flowers, loaded them into the car and my next stop was to see a friend who just got out of the hospital to loan them some money and bring them some wine. When I finished with that, it was time to return to the house and get going.

When I entered the house, there she was in front of the make-up mirror just starting to put on her make up. I blew a fuse. I told her I was going out to get a haircut that I never got on Friday because the barber went home sick. Figured I try a new barber that had opened up just down the road. I was just getting ready to make a U-turn to get to the barbers when the cell rang. It was her telling me that she was now ready and would finish her make up oin the road. Just great!

Returned to the house and prepared to FINALLY hit the road. Now the only way to get her out of the house, is to get 4 of the 6 dogs in the garage and exit via the front door. One dog has seen this trick before and refuses to go into the garage. The other one just lays on the couch while I get the other 4 into the garage. As we leave, the dog sitter holds onto the one that refuses to go into the garage while we exit. Sometimes it's tough leaving these mutts and other times it ain't that hard! This was one of the latter times.

Finally on the road with only one more stop at the bank. I had wired her daughter $1500 that she needed, and Faye had to get into the safe deposit box to pay me back. With that being done, we finally hit the road. The trip there was uneventful, and the traffic wasn't so bad for a Saturday. It was just before 1 pm and we hit Vegas at a few minutes before 5pm.

Pulling up to the valet area of ST, was like visiting an old friend. A little bit of trepidation yet excitement to see an old friend. Since I called ahead when hitting Stateline (Primm), and spoke to my contact at the front desk, I had my choice of two remaining B suites, 440 or 930. I opted for the higher suite which I knew we had stayed in before. I just wondered if it was a "lucky" suite, or one that cost me some money. Got a bellman as I went to the front desk, and Faye supervised the unloading while I Gold card which I never received before. Reading what the Gold Card offers was interesting. You basically can eat anywhere in the hotel, except Dunkin Donuts but including Calamity Janes Ice Cream ParloTalking to Singer before I left, he told me he had ordered $500 bottles of wine and they always picked it up. He said they would call the host up, but he never got turned down. He advised me not to try it the first time using the card. I'm not into wine anyway, so that's not going to happen.

We got up to the room, and she advised me she wouldn't be ready to go down for about an hour. WHAT???? I told her I was going downstairs and she could page me when she was ready to join me. That way I could help her get downstairs without taking a tumble. She now walks with a cane ans wears gloves all the time. Neuropathy really sucks. So downstairs I went.

I stopped off first at the Stage Coach bar since the Winchester bar had it's progressive royal hit recently, and sat at only 1038$. Apparently, the Stage Coach bar also got hit recently as their jackpot was only $1042. I decided to sit down and get my feet wet playing DDB quarters. I went through a twenty...then another twenty...and was about to slip in another twenty when I heard the bartender mention that one of our favorite bartenders, Pam, was coming on duty at the Winchester bar. I put in two fives instead and pumped that up a little, but when I got back to $10 I cashed out and went downstairs.

Sure enough, Pam was at one side of the bar and Leah was at the other. I sat down in the middle of the bar and asked Pam for a Tanqueray and tonic. She told me Leah would get my drink. I asked if she was going on break, and she told me things had changed at the bar. Leah covered one side, and she covered the other. So I asked her which was her "side. She said she couldn't tell me...not that it was that hard to figure out. I just shook my head and laughed. I didn't want to hurt Leahs feelings by moving right away, so I put in my players card and slipped in a twenty to play a comination or Bonus Poker and DDB. After losing another twenty, I decided to move to the machine on my right. I was now stuck $80, and I decided to switch to dollars.

I started out playing DDB, and I was down to 75 credits before I knew it. I switched to BP, and wouldn't you know it, I held a pair of aces and when I hit the deal button I was staring at 4 Aces...but get this....the damn deuce of clubs sitting right in the middle of the screen. ?L:KYTJXRESLKFXCJK>BN!!!! How the hell did that ever happen? Instead of waiting for a hand pay of $2000, I got 400 credits. BUT....it still put me up for the day by over $300. When I got down to 400 credits, I cashed out and decided to walk upstairs and see if she was ready.

When I walked into the room, I heard her say she was just getting ready to page me. I told her to hurry up as the bar was startiong to fill up. The bartenders were complaining to me that it's been so quite. I told them the slot tournament was coming to town and they were sure to get more action. She asked me if I told Pam to save us two seats. When I told her I didn't, she just had to give me an earful. I told her she said that she might not even come down if she wasn't feeling well. When we got downstairs, sure enough Pam's section was all filled up. But there were two machines with a "Gone Fishing" sign covering them up. When I told Pam to save us two seats, she pointed to the two covered machines and said they were ours. Now that's a great bartender for you. She knew I was going upstairs to get Faye, so she wanted us to have seats in her section so she covered two up for us to play. What a sweetheart. She was well rewarded for her thoughtfulness.

We sat down and I asked her what she wanted to play. Dollars was the answer. So I gave her a slot card and a hundred, and we started to play. More correctly, I started to play. She was going to catch up with all the gossip with Pam. I finally had to tell her to play a hand before her card times out. She played one hand and went back to talking to Pam. Again I was switching between DDB and BP, and finally caught 4 fives playing BP...naturally. I played down to $200 and cashed out. She finally went through her first hundred and asked for more. By this time, I had slipped in another $200. I got to the point after putting in $100 more, and I decided I wasn't going to go into my $600 in TITO vouchers since she was just about ready to go back upstairs and she said she would quit when she reached $50. As luck would have it, she kept above $50, and I reached into my pocket to pull out some small money for Caveman Keno. Somehow I had another voucher for $15. I still don't know where it came from. But I put it in the machine, selected quarters and then Caveman Keno. I kept hitting some small wins, but then I hit for 80 coins on a 4x bonus. So I wass ready to quit whenever she was, but her machine hjust wouldn't let her cash out. Everytime she got to 55 credits, she would hit a hand.

I usually play a 6 spot with my favorite numbers being 2-12-22-13-23-33. When they didn't hit, I would go to the lower part of the screen...and then the middle...and then the top right. She finally got to $50 and I was almost at 80 credits, so I told her this would be my last hand. I went back to my favorite numbers, and as the balls started to fall, it filled in 1 then2 then 3 then 4 then 5 numbers!! Holy Toledo!!! I only had one number to hit the jackpot. BINGO!! The 3 came in the last number and I had hit 6 out of 6. It paid 3120 quarters which was $780. I was really excited since it would get me upo over $100 for the day, until I realized what a short pay machine this was. Normally a 6 out of 6 would pay $1500!! Ain't that the pits. But a win was still a win, especially since I was just paaing time until she got finished. I cashed out $795 and I got her ready to go back upstairs.

As I left the room to go back downstairs, I told her I'd be back up by midnight. It was just after 10 pm. I had already made up my mind that it was time to try the High Limit area and try to make this a wonderful start to the trip.

I sat down at a five dollar machine that had been fairly good to me in the past. Actually, it was a multi game, multi denomination slant top machine. But I select $5 and bonus poker as my choice. I was hoping that even if I didn't win, I'd stay close to even and put in a ton of points. Winning was my first option naturally. I put in three crisp $100 bills and prayed for the best. Well, I got a ton of play for my $300 before the credit meter read zero. I sat and thought for a while trying to decide of some sort of game plan. Four Aces with a kicker was what I wished for but any 4OAK would do, especially if it was one of the bonus kind. I sat down with $1395, but wasn't going to piss that away. I decide to put in $200 more. Started with DDB, and when that didn't produced my desired result, Switched to BP ands within 5 hands hit 4 5's. Nice $625 win. I thought I would play down to $700, cash out and deposit $200 more into the machine...being even if I lost the $200. But I kept on getting Aces, either in pairs or 3 OAK and I was sure that a minimum of $ Aces was right around the corner. However, no one told the machine that, and it wasn't too long before the credit meter was down to "zero"> Decided to put in $100 more, and with 25 credits left, I hit a full house. That's the ticket....one 4OAK would get me back to even or even to the plus side. But that wasn't to be, and that stupid meter was back to zero again. Maybe it wasn't the meter who was "stupid".

Left the High Limnit area and when I walked back to the main casino, I spotted one of those Reversible Royals quarter machines playing DB. After an uneventful $40 loss, I decided to go back to the Winchester bar. I took the last seat on the right, and noticed it was a multi denomination machine that went up to $5. HMM! But I decided to play dollars again, and if I wound up hitting something good in dollars, I could always move up to the $2 or $5 level.

Well, I hit my share of 4OAK's that kept me in action, and actually got up to the over $500 level on just my first $100 in the machine. If I quit then, I would have recouped 400 of the 640 I was now stuck. Somehow I blew right by the $500 level and SWORE that I would quit at 400 credits. It was now past midnight, and I had promised her I would be up by midnight. But I figured she was now sacked out and wouldn't really miss me. If she really wanted me upstairs, she would have paged me by now.

I must have stayed between the $420-$480 range ofr 20 minutes. Somehow, this machine didn't want me to leave. At least that was my way of thinking. I was starting to talk to Pam again when I got dealt 2 3's. I was still gabbing with her when I hit the deal button, and lo and behold, when I looked back at the machine, I had 4 '3s WITH the deuce kicker.....and this time I WAS playing the "right" game! YAHOOO! An $800 payout which put me over 1200 credits. The machine kicks out a TITO when you exceed $1199, so I collected that one and stuck it in my pocket. There was no way in hell that I was going below $1000, and when I reached $1075, I heard my name paged. Uh oh!!! Busted! But when I cashed out my ticket and answered the phone, she was actually in a good mood. I told her about my 4 3's w/kicker and she asked me when I was coming up. I told her if I reached 1000 I would be right upstairs. Went back to the machine, and true to my word, I cashed at 1000 credits and headed upstairs.

On my way up, my stomach was growling and I wondered why. Turns out that we had only eaten a McDonald's cheesburger with fries on the way to Vegas, and that was about noon. It was now closed to 1 am. I wondered what was open at this hour and when I got to the room, I picked up the phone and asked if the Sports Deli was still open. She replied in the affirmative and I asked her if she was hungry. She said she was just going to take a bite of mine. I was in the mood for a corned beef sandwich, but when I got down to the deli, they didn't have any corned beef only pastrami. I knew that's what she liked, so I would order that for her, and I switched to a quarter pound all beef hot dog. HMMM! I gave the counterman my Gold Card and all I had to do was sign the receipt. Better than having to ask for a comp all the time, especially since no one would be around at this hour to sign for one.

Just a few words comparing the Silverton to Sam's Town. Sam's Town is in dire need to renovate their suites. They've already remodeled the A suites, and a lot of the rooms. These rooms all have flat screen TV's, and it's beyond mne why they wouldn't remodel one of their largest suites to satisfy guests that are comped in these rooms. The B suites at ST have one 27" Magnovox in the bedroom, and one old maybe 50" projection TV in the living room. Not satisfactory at all. It's very nice that these suites overlook Mystic Falls wher they put on the laser light show, but listening to that wolf howl every night and day could get annoying.

One thing nice about ST is the bathrooms. They all have a bidet. I don't use one, but every time I see one I think about my deceased friend that had to have one in his bathroom no matter where he lived. Cost him 10 grand to put in the last one after he moved. One great thing about ST bathrooms, is that they have a hot water recirculating system that gives you hit water instantly when you turn on the facet or shower. At the Silverton, you have to wait minutes before you get hot water. ST has towel racks near the vanity, where the Silverton has them inside the bathroom whcih really isn't convenient as you drip water all over the floor. However, on our last trip to the Silverton, the had installed towel racks near the sinks...at least in our suite...maybe they're smartening up. They both have large jacuzzis and great showers although the Silverton has three different shower heads to get washed in multiple directions. She likes the ST showers better since they have a seat in the shower to make it easier to shave her legs.

Overall, ST has a much larger suite and comes with a fridge where I have to order one from the Silverton. ST seems to have improved it's beds and pillows, but the check mark goes to the Silveton with it's Bellagio matresses, Pacific pillows and comforter.

Well it's almost 1 pm and I haven't even been downstairs. Made some coffee in the room, and wolfed down some TastyKakes from back east. The only place we can get TastyKakes in Calif. is from Philly Cheese Steaks stores that import them from back east. If you don't know what TastyKakes are, just Google them and see what you're missing.

I've already won one basketball game today and I'm watching the other one as I type. Have money on the Miami Heat laying 4. Well, it's time to get in the shower and get downstairs. She is totally sacked out in bed since she didn't go to bed until 3 am. She said she was going to get plenty of rest this trip, and it looks like she means it. Planning to go to Billy Bob's tonight if it's not too crowded. Otherwise tomorrow will be good enough. Also planning a trip to Lawry's the Prime Rib. Tomorrow the slot tounament crowd will hit town, and they have a registration buffet and usually give out some sort of "gift". Last time it was some sort of Bar-B-Q cookbook from some famous chef who's name I forget.

So stay tuned....I'll be back tomorrow ...or maybe even tonight with another report. Just for a point of information, ST doesn't have in house WiFi. They have some sort of system that is hooked up to the TV's, but if you want WiFi service like I'm using, you have to go to an outside vendor and give them a credit card. Cost is 9.99 a day. No chance of getting a comp for this, while the Silverton has in house WiFi and I get it comped. Till tomorrow then!
Nice and detailed trip report. I've never had a TastyKake but makes me want to try one now. If my memory serves me right I recall seeing TastyKakes at a 99 cents store in Los Angeles but it might not be the same thing.
TaskyKake is in Philly was just sold. We're hoping the new owners keep the brand alive and expand the distribution. The chocolate cupcakes, chocolate juniors, apple pie, and peanut butter kandy kakes are my favorites.
SOunds like you did pretty good with the 4oak's-congrats. Waiting for part 2!

Great start to the trip! Keep it coming. I'm impressed with the caveman keno hit.
Thanks for the report. Regarding TastyKakes - did you know they were purchased by a Georgia firm. I grew up on them. So sad.

DonDiego also grew up on TastyKakes, . . . and when he lived far, far away he could always count on his parents to send him a few boxes on his birthday and for Christmas, and bring a few when they visited.
It is sad.
Anyway, Flowers Foods, Inc. is, indeed, a Thomasville, GA firm with a market capitalization of almost $3-billion and pretty much a nationwide footprint. Tasty Baking of Philadelphia had fallen from a stock-price of $7.70 to $1.50 over the past year. Flowers offered $4-per-share and raised the market capitalization from under $13-million to about $34-milion in one day.

DonDiego favored the Butterscotch Krimpets.
The deli in the building I work in has TastyKakes. I tried a couple of them and don't really understand all the hype? They're super sweet cakes that remind me of Hostess products.

So BA, if you're down in the Sorrento Valley area, you can pick them up there (I can give you the address).
