Saturday Music Pick - 23 Feb 2013

Tonight's pick is an unusual one, inasmuch as this lady rarely plays any instrument other than her voice.
She is a personal friend and she has visited BC Canada, where we first met, several times
She is the best loop artist that I have ever seen - that is, she lays down an average of 16 individual tracks, live on stage, and plays them in differing combinations, while singing over them in English and Maori, to create her unique sound.

Last year she returned to her native New Zealand to tour and on a whim decided to audition for New Zealand's Got Talent. She made it to the semifinals.

Here is Mihirangi -

Wow, she’s good, Tony!

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard loops before as a smaller part of a mainstream recording, but I’ve never heard an artist who stacks numerous loops to multiply her music the way Mihirangi does. When I heard it, my jaw dropped – just like the judges on New Zealand’s Got Talent.

I watched several of her performances and interviews on YouTube, including one where she described some of the equipment she uses. In addition to her musical talent, it obviously takes a tremendous amount of technical skill to do what she does. She’s got a lot to keep track of during a performance. The array of foot pedals alone looks baffling to me.

But however she manages to pull it off, the sound she achieves is unique and very enjoyable. To me, some of her music seemed almost trance-inducing. I really liked it.

Thanks for posting another excellent choice!
