Saturday Night Music Pick - 16 March, 2013

Another Saturday night - another Music Pick!
My pick tonight is a tribute to an incredibly talented drummer who died this week - Clive Burr.

Clive played with many bands in his career, the most notable being Iron Maiden. He played on their first three albums, then went on to play with a variety of bands including Supergroup Gogmagog and the post Twisted Sister group Desperado.

Clive had a lot of health issues

He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, the treatment of which left him deeply in debt. Iron Maiden staged a series of charity concerts and were involved in the founding of the Clive Burr MS Trust Fund.
Burr used a wheelchair because of his condition.
He was also the patron of Clive Aid, a charity formed in 2004. Clive Aid has continued to raise awareness and funds for various cancer and multiple sclerosis programs around the world through the staging of rock events and Burr attended many of these events.

He died in his sleep on 12 March 2013, at age 56.

In a statement released on band's website Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris stated "This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time."

I have selected 4 videos which I believe highlight his talent and the respect that he earned from his peers.

The first one is a tribute compilation -

The second clip is his solo on their Tokyo Gig in 1982,

Clip three is another tribute with stills from his life

Clip four contains one of my favourite drum solos of all time.
It was recorded in 1981 during a concert in Palasport, Italy.
It features him playing his most famous drum kit - which is now on display at the Hard Rock Café in London England.

Even if you are not a metal fan, I hope that you can appreciate his talent.

Wow, enjoyed that, Tony. Clive was obviously a very talented drummer, especially as evidenced by those Palasport and Tokyo clips.

Sounds like the poor guy struggled with serious health issues for much of his life. It’s sad that he just recently passed away, but perhaps we can find comfort in the knowledge that his soul is finally at peace.

Thanks for posting.

By the way, there’s a problem with the YouTube links in your post. Clips 1 and 2 work OK, but Clips 3 and 4 are currently just repeats of Clip 2. Maybe you could edit. In the meantime, I’m guessing that these are the 3rd and 4th clips you wanted to present:

Clip 3 - Some stills (1:12)

Clip 4 - Palasport, Italy, 1981 (6:30)

Thanks for spotting that Jim - I corrected it (BTW - you got one out of two )
