Seeking update on Uber vs. cabbie discussion

The Vegas taxi drivers have brought this usage of alternate (Lyft and Uber) choices of public transportation on themselves with their "long hauling" and surly demeanor concerning getting tipped. I hope that Lyft and Uber hurt the taxi providers to the point where they clean up their money gouging act - which I doubt will happen.

Those bad apples may be anywhere.

You have to remember what you are comparing to. That bad driver got a bad rating from you and probably everyone else she gave a ride to. I am told that Uber will "fire" drivers who do not maintain a high rating. Complain about the same quality of a driver in a taxi and nothing will happen. A taxi driver will certainly not be fired for bad complaints.

Taxi companies do not use sufficient background checks either. Just based on odds, probabilities and generalization (we are all gamblers, right?) someone who owns a newer, well cared for and clean car is far more likely to be safe than the average taxi driver.
Don't cab drivers in Vegas need to get licensed by the county?

To the OP, you could get a fare quote from Uber or Lyft by clicking on cities when you are on their webpages. Also, Lyft sends promotional fares for new sign ups. For instance when I signed up with Lyft they sent $10 off my first 5 rides to be used within 2 weeks of signing up. Uber didn't have any promotional fares when I signed up. As you know with promotions they tend to disappear quickly so your mileage may vary. I'm more partial towards Lyft because of those promotional fares I received although Lyft and Uber are basically the same.
I have not used Uber in Vegas, but I have used it a few times back home. except for one case, the car was cleaner and the service better than a cabbie. the one bad experience was a lady in a mini-van that picked me up. she clearly had several dogs. the vehicle stunk!! it smelled like dirty dawg, my sinuses went haywire almost instantly. (and I do love dogs BTW) when I got to my destination I took off my jacket and shook off the pet hair and stench the best I could. it took my sinuses 24 hours to recover. I should have logged in and gave her a bad review but I didn't. I have had cab drivers that had quite a stench as well.

That would make it easy for illegal aliens to get a license. Oh wait, that's Kalifornia.
My buddy drives for Uber in Seattle.
A customer complained of sexual harassment and my buddy was immediately suspended. No hearing,no arbitration.

The truth came out later. She was in a black out/drunken state.
He was re-instated 2 days after the incident.
His Nissan is always clean and he is a good and friendly person/driver.

It takes all kinds of people...
He drives at night, so he sees a LOT of drunk riders.
His best nights are rainy/stormy ones.
Oh the irony. I saw an Uber new car white Acura picking up a passenger at the grocery store. The 30 year old black man was loading grocery bags into the truck as the 70 year old white woman was standing near the truck, he was a good man. The 30 year old black man then pushed the shopping cart to the curb as the 70 year old woman closed the truck. The 70 year old woman then got behind the wheel as the 30 year old black man jumped in the back seat and off they went. True story.
