Sick in Vegas?

never been sick but I am careful about what I eat. generally, cooked foods only. I avoid cold foods which are more likely to carry bacteria. when I eat at buffets the hot foods only... plus the desserts like cheesecakes which generally are cut "in the kitchen" and aren't handled or likely to be contaminated by other patrons of the buffet.

several years ago the "novo virus" (I think thats what it was called) was making its rounds in Vegas and hundreds were sickened by it.
WOW!! Thanks for the heads up money! Guess I know what I am eating from now on when I hit a buffet.

If it didn't taste right, why did you finish it? That's the good thing about a buffet, take a bite and if it don't taste right....eat something else.

Now the Boardwalk buffet was a different story....the orange stuff would make you just as sick as the purple or green stuff. I hope they had good toilet paper in the rooms there because their guests had to be crapping like crazy.

salukidean,

I didn't finish it. It was buffalo chili as I remember it. I wasn't sure what it was supposed to taste like, but after a couple of bites I suspected it was not right. A couple of bites apparenty, was a couple bites too many.

The Boardwalk buffet did have quite the reputation, right down there with Circus Circus.
I got food illness somewhere after my 1st day in Vegas but don't know which eatery it was. It wasn't at the Venetian.

I was staying at the Venetian. They were very understanding. I let the host know I would not be gambling and would be staying in the room however.

They checked on me a couple times and still comped the room. I was in the room all the time except to get out once or twice in three days to get soup and crackers.

I still got additional offers and comps in the future.

Story two:

Many years ago we used to go to Lake Tahoe (alternately N and S shore) about once a month when we lived in Northern California. Once we were staying at (I believe it was the Hilton at North shore) a hotel/casino. I got so ill that I had to be taken to the emergency room at N Shore. The nurse said that a flu like illness was very common in the winters at N shore (ski places and casinos). I would hope that it doesn't continue to this day!!

Love the stories everyone! Keep bringing them on.
Imperial Palace Buffet, . . . back when they had the regular buffet out front, . . . and the super-cheap buffet down a narrow corridor in back. Umm, . . . DonDiego made the thrifty choice to save a few bucks.

DonDiego made it to the Grand Canyon where he ended up on a gurney at the medical clinic getting "fed" a saline solution to restore his fluids.
I've caught the runs from something from La Salsa.

If your system isn't used to a lot of grease, you can throw it into shock (Montezuma's Revenge) when you eat certain things at the buffets.
Last December the Pasta Palace in the Boulder Station Casino was having a special on spaggetti and meatballs for $6.99 so the wife, my mother in law and I stopped in.

My wife took one bite of the meatballs and spit it out. The mother in law bitched thru1 1/2 of the 3 meat balls(as mother in laws do!). I on the other hand was a trooper and and choked down all 3 large meatballs, even after being shown how grey /green the meat was in a cut open one (learned from my military days???)

My wife was ok, my mother inlaw had "a spell" after a few hours and spent the rest of the night in the room. I almost had to rent another room because I spent so much time in the bathroom no one else could use it!

4 days in vegas and I spent one of them in the Bathroom, with my mother in law in the other room thanking me hourly (in her own special way) for taking me out to supper.

Every time I see Chef Ramseys "kitchen Nightmares" on TV I think about that night.
Gold Coast buffet maybe ten years ago. Six of us ate the buffet but I was the only idiot who tried the salmon, and the only one who got sick, so that was likely the culprit. Spent the next day in my room thinking I was dying
I posted this on another thread...

I got sick from Aria's room service. It was a late night meal of veggie fried rice and chocolate ice cream (don't ask and I'm not pregnant!). I'm not sure which one made me sick, but if I had to guess I'd say the rice.

It was awful! I had fluctuations in temperature, I'd be really, really hot, then cold. At one point I ended up laying on the bathroom floor because it was so cold (had a towel under me).

After a few hours I was able to get to sleep. I was able to function in the morning and had to catch an afternoon flight to Reno. I had to get something in my stomach, so I had not choice but to order room service...talk about scary!

Anyway, I ordered their chicken noodle soup. It was really good! The veggies and noodles (rotelle) came in the bowl and broth came in a small pot. The delivery girl poured the broth into the bowl after she'd set everything up. It definitely made me feel a lot better.

Even though I did have that one bad experience, I do have to say that Aria has the best room service. The food has always been really good and it's not your typical "room service" type food. They make it more gourmet.
