Sick in Vegas?

Im happy to know that room service at Aria was good... on my last two visits to Caesars the room service sucked. They changed their menu and the dishes just arent as good as they used to be.

The food wasnt unhealthy and there was no illness -- it just was not good.

ordered their ribs on my last trip, and there was no meat, no flavor, and tough. even the breakfast pastries werent as fresh as they used to be.
I don't want to mention any establishments,
because I can't be sure of what it was I ate that was the culprit (if in fact it was food related), and that just wouldn't be right.

However, I once was feeling pretty nauseous and queasy a day or so on one Vegas vacation.
I had to skip a couple of meals until I felt better, ........ not fun when on vacation and everyone else is chowing down.

I will say that I now try to stay clear of hot dogs from a cart , and will not eat chili at a certain Vegas buffet again.

Rick
I know a lot of you love your buffets. Good for you. Seriously.

I on the other hand can't stand them. I've gotten sick from them 2 or 3 times.

One time at RedRock landed me in Summerlin Hospital for 3 days. Diagnosis...food borne virus.

My guess was all the men I see using the toilets and not washing their hands then off to the buffet to handle all the serving utensils.

I think of Vegas as one big viral melting pot with people from around the world adding their own 2 cents every day.

Again...I'm not bashing buffets. They're just another Vegas game of chance.

Your comment does make alot of sense. Not that all Vegas buffets are bad, but just knowing the fact about people using the restroom and not washing after alone, makes me not want to eat at buffets.

Some great stories here. I can't believe a handfull of you have ended up in the hospital from this. Glad everyone made it ok.

I for one, ate at the local Chili's resteraunt about 14 years ago. I ended up getting food poisening and a bacterial infection in my stomach. I was very overweight at the time 5'9" @ 300lbs. I ended up being sick for 1.5 years and lost a total of 155lbs. Went from a size 46 waist to a 34. Guess Chili's helped me with weight loss. I am back up to 220 lbs now, but I exercise weekly and am in pretty good shape now.

Great weight loss plan! You may have a tough time marketing it though. LOL.

Sorry you had to endure that.

I always make it a point not to touch with my hands any buffet food that I'm eating, for this very cross-contamination reason.

Rick
I've never been sick in Vegas. I'm a carrier, not a victim.

never been sick but I am careful about what I eat. generally, cooked foods only. I avoid cold foods which are more likely to carry bacteria. when I eat at buffets the hot foods only... plus the desserts like cheesecakes which generally are cut "in the kitchen" and aren't handled or likely to be contaminated by other patrons of the buffet.

several years ago the "novo virus" (I think thats what it was called) was making its rounds in Vegas and hundreds were sickened by it.

Nice theory, but unfortunately not very accurate. Basically, you can get a food borne illness from pretty much anything you eat, hot or cold. Food that has not been properly cleaned, cooked, handled or is kept heated/chilled to an inappropriate temperature are all possible sources for food poisoning. Poultry (salmonella) and Pork (toxoplasma) are frequent culprits (and both are always served cooked). Cold foods aren't always safe either - Deli meats and Dairy Products such as cheese can carry Listeria. Eggs & Produce can both carry salmonella as well. For example, Caesar Salad is a big red flag item since it combines both of these raw ingredients. Basically, no matter how careful you are you could still suffer this. You have no control over how the food you eat (at restaurants or at home) has been treated every step of the way from the farm to the table. An off-taste or smell are certainly big clues, but often there is no such warning. At some point in their lives, everyone will eventually have a problem due to this - from a minor stomach upset to a major hospitalization. They may not even recognize it for what it is. It's really just the luck of the draw. Exercising some caution about where and what you eat is a great start, but it's not foolproof.

BTW, Noro Virus is the one that often hits the cruise ships as well - thats why they are always so paranoid about making everyone use hand sanitizers every chance they get.
