Socal:driving vs flying

I just walked in the door from driving all night from San Diego to Tacoma WA. Your 4.5 hour drive sounds like a piece of cake.
I drive rather than fly for many reasons. For one thing, we take so much "junk" with us we could never take a flight. 2nd reason is it probably works out to almost the same amount of time whether you fly or drive. First of all, you have to drive to the airport. Then you have to stand in line to check your bags. Then you have to go through airport security which could take G-D knows how long. Then you have to wait for your flight to board. Finally you get to take off and have your 1 hour flight. Now you land and have to pick up your bags. Now you have to get a taxi or some other kind of transportation, like a rental car, and who knows how long that line will be. Finally, you have the trip to your hotel which might be anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour depending on where you're staying and how the traffic is on the strip.

So basically you might be talking about more than the 4 hour drive from the SoCal area. And even with the rising gas prices, you're only talking about maybe $100 round trip for all in your car, instead of maybe $200 RT air for EACH person.

Even coming from Maine, we'd rather drive than deal with the airlines any more. .

Wow, that's quite a jaunt. Sounds like about three days driving each way,no?

5 days of driving and 4 nights on the road, but we don't push. We have favorite places we like to stop, and stop early so we can visit local casinos along the way. k

Next time you guys drive let me know if you come through New Mexico. I live right off the interstate 40 (old rt 66). Several nice casinos here. I will meet up with you.
