Something New to Worry About

"It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim.
Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain."

" . . . Humanity may just now be entering the period in which its rapid civilisational expansion could be detected by an Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence [ETI] because our expansion is changing the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, via greenhouse gas emissions."

" 'Green' aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. "

DonDiego sorta recalls seeing this scenario in some B-movie in the 1950's at The Sauconia Theater in his hometown, . . . pr'bly for like 25-cents.

The recent remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still has a plot on a similar vein.

I think this peer reviewed paper has now made it obvious that peer review is not much better than getting into the National Enquirer. We can only hope that the recent paper by Lindzen/Choi showing only minor warming from GHGs will put an end to carbonphobia.

Thar be whales here.

The 1951 original was based on the aliens fear that Earthlings had invented nuclear weapons. The remake was based on aliens' fear that Earthlings are causing global warming.

People fear different things at different times, . . . i.e. 1951 vs 2008.
Whether this applies to aliens, DonDiego does not know. It does seem whatever the motivation, aliens prefer to tote long-haired blondes.

DD,

I am not worried in the least about this potential extraterrestrial threat. It is a know fact, that any such attack can be repelled by use of our secret weapon against aliens. Scientific research has proven that all aliens are repulsed by bagpipe music.

DonDiego....I think you just need more hugs in your life...don't worry, be happy...Come on over here, big boy.

btw Random...I thought it was proven in the Mars Attacks movie that aliens can't tolerate yodeling...are ya sure about the bagpipe thing? I sure don't want to be playing my yodeling CD when they show up and find out that it's bagpipes they can't tolerate!
I can't imagine the damage done to the Earth while wiping us out.

Na, never happen, Al Gore won't allow it as it would make his Nobel look meaningless. Anyone who thinks GW is not man made is stupid, an utter fool, an idiot who deserves to be shot, or an evil Republican.

The "peer reviewed" paper was done by the same people who did the original study with the exception of the author, so of course it would show the programmed results. Anyone who could not repeat the results was a charlatan to be shamed out of the scientific community as an idiot.
