The humor in the remark was that someone who would mispronounce "moron" as "maroon" suggested, perhaps, the speaker was not as wise as he thought himself.

I frequently use the term 'maroon' for the same effect as described by DD. Don't know if it humors others as much as it does me, but that doesn't really matter.
