Math word problems feature cotton-picking slaves and beatings...

I love the school's excuse: they were simply trying to combine social studies and math in one assignment.

mebbe kids wouldn't relate/ as cotton is picked by machines.. how do you give kids an idea of how many cottons there are? Bags?
I dunno How many kids know what a real farm looks like?- I mean, other than McDonalds..

I haven't seen the actual test so I cant verify the reporter's reporting. But are 3rd grade math problems featuring orange-picking slaves somehow less offensive? not sure I get where you are coming from.
