Tablet update

For anyone interested.

My new tablet(samsung galaxy) has been quite a hit here. Mostly games have been played on it. My wife is addicted to a few and can play for a few hours at a time, very unlike her. I'm still looking and downloding appropriate apps,it's a work in progress getting this thing how i would like to have it.

One thing i'm disappointed in is i cant find an app to make some sort of list/stuff/notes/itinerary on it. Another ther thing is battery life(they said 14 hrs) i give it about 6-8 playing games maybe a little more just surfing. Have no idea how much it eats when videos are played, which brings me to next beef so far. I haven't spent a ton of time trying to figure out how to download music/videos,but it's proving difficult. I also thought the GPS would work w/o having to have a data connection, why wouldn't?,the GPS in the car doesn't need it,well, wrong on that point

Overall,it's a great new addition and I foresee it being invaluable when traveling. Even tho GPS doesn't work i can save maps on mapquest, and that works fine. I can get anywhere with a compass and an atlas, just give me a street map. Navigation is super easy and speed is pretty good,so no qualms there.

Overall i give it a B. For us it's a very functional "toy" and i/we like it alot. Biggest beef is my disappoint with the batt. life.

JOHN

PS Its great for dialysis days, nap a little(still pissed i missed the earthquake) and play on the tablet. They have wi-fi there,so thats pretty cool
Has the tablet replaced your laptop?
No,not by a long shot. I haven't explored everything yet as far as what it can do,but so far i can't ever see it coming close to my PC.

John, Ihad to call Samsung Customer Service a few times.
Once when I called they said I had to download Vista to make it compatable with my laptop,
but the next time the rep said I didn't.
Basically you just plug in the USB cable and drag and drop the music.
After you do this you will see quite a few additional songs and albums added to your music for free.
It's pretty cool.

BTW, I'm typing this on my new tablet now.

I have a tab...awesome product.
I purchased the keyboard for it and for my trips it has replaced the netbook.

used on plane, watched 2 hour movie and had 81% batt. life left, I get around 10 hours of use.
Okay, someone out there please help me. I just bought the 32 GB Samsung Galaxy 10.1 at Best Buy. I asked the clerk if they sell data plans for Verizon. He said they did.

I was led over to the cellular phone desk and was handed over to another clerk. I said I wanted to get the 5G / 50 dollar per month 4G plan from Verizon. He said "no problem". He then went in a cabinet and pulled out one of the Verizon hot spot devices.

I was under the impression with wi-fi that Verizon is covering most of the country, and after I entered my code for my plan into the tablet, that I basically could go almost anywhere and not need the hot spot device in my pocket?

Am I wrong about this?

I didn't purchase the device and told the guy I wanted to investigate it a little bit more.
I think you are confusing Wi-Fi with Wireless Networks in general. You normally wouldn’t associate the term 4G with Wi-Fi. That device the clerk was handing you was something to connect you to Verizon's 3G/4G wireless not Wi-Fi network.

This is what it says on the Verizon site:
Quote

What is Verizon Wi-Fi? Verizon Wi-Fi* is a service that enables qualified Verizon FiOS Internet subscribers to access the internet at thousands of public places known as Wi-Fi hotspots. This wireless service is not intended to be used from your home, but to be used while on-the-go.

The Wi-Fi service seems to me to be nothing more than a perk for their FiOS subscribers. If you look at their site the $50 for 5 is the price of their subscriptions to their cell network based wireless service.

Thanks Mal.

Just to clarify, unless I go to WI-FI spots (like Starbucks, McDonalds, many hotels, etc.) I generally can't surf or use the internet? If I want general nationwide coverage, then I have to use that hot spot device?
Correct you wont be able to surf with your tablet unless their is some sort of public WI-FI available. The device the clerk handed you was to set-up your own mobile hotspot where you would have a hotspot for any type of device with a Wi-Fi receiver anywhere in the country that has a 3G/4G Verizon signal available. Just look at their data coverage maps if you want to know where the dead spots are.

If you don't mind me asking ,how did you load the movie onto the tablet? I want to copy from of my dvds straight to the the tab. Do i have to load them on my pc first?,or can i do it straight from dvd drive to tab? Sorry to sound so ignorant, but these little stumbling blocks are driving me crazy.

I've only got 11days left now and and starting to panic, thought i had all the time in the world, now its counting down quick. I think i can do the music, but not sure EXACTLY how do do it either(same deal, want to do it straight from CD).

ARRGHHH! most can't wait now,i need more time! A few other reasons, not just technical HAHA. No way in hell am i postponing this trip!

I really appreciate any tips on loading movies and tunes(you also rick for sure). Thanks.

JOHN
