I spent 10 days in Costa Rica two winters ago, my folks rented a home for 2 months and I joined them down there. I flew in and out of San Jose and stayed about an hour out up into a mountain region near Acosta. I went into 3 0r 4 Casino's in San Jose, they are on the small side, mostly slots and smokey, speaking of smoke, any time spent in San Jose was filled with Diesel smoke from traffic outside, very prominent ! Shopping is cheap, food inexpensive, plenty of things to see and do.
Going online will give you some sightseeing info and my guess is that where you are staying will have all kinds of things to do, One nice thing I did was spend the night prior to deptarture in San Jose at the Best Western Downtown, and they shuttled me free to the Airport had a free coctail reception, free phone to call home, free boarding pass and a free breakfast that morning $80.00 was able to do alot by foot that day in SJ, The Best Western Airport has its own Casino but is not near the city and was more $ the airport is about 10 miles from downtown San Jose. Enjoy your trip.
