Taliban Terrorist / American Soldier Swap

I don't think that Lincoln would have traded Longstreet for a sgt.
5 high ranking Taliban for 1 low ranking US Soldier? Really? There was no kind of 1 for 1 deal that could have been reached?

Obama's skills at negotiating are a known quanity...and not flattering. It reminds me of when he negotiated with Republicans to kill the public option in the health care bill in exchange for ZERO of their votes.

You got that right.

Once I attended a very congenial event where local candidates for political office, on opposite sides spoke, only to see it grossly (and negatively) mischaracterized in the newspaper. Evidently the truth was not sensational enough.

Per the newspaper report, if you weren't there you would have thought "they all got drunk and fights broke out."
I think we made a huge mistake giving into terrorists. All I can hope is that the five we released have unfortunate accidents in the next couple of weeks courtesy of U.S. covert ops.

Let's see 5, who will return to their homeland to train more fighters to kill the infidels for one soldier who should probably be up on treason charges. (Obama will make sure that this does not happen so he can try and save face).
This white house has been out thought on Syria, Iran, Putin and now the taliban. Oh, and did I mention Putin, more than one occasion.
How can one man do so much damage to this country in 6 years? Can't wait too see what the remaining 2 will bring?
“I am ashamed to be an American. And the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools. I am sorry for everything. The horror that is America is disgusting.”__Private Bergdahl in a June 2009 e-mail to his parents shortly before leaving his post

It seems the acorn really don't fall far from the tree.
__Mr. Robert Bergdahl [Father of the Soldier] in a June 2014 tweet subsequently deleted from his account

"In the name of Allah the most gracious and most merciful”__Robert Bergdahl with The Obama in the Rose Garden, 31 May 2014

DonDiego was mistaken. In his original post of this thread DonDiego feared the United States may have made a poor deal in exchanging 5 high-ranking personnel of theirs for 1 low-ranking soldier of ours. It now looks like the United States traded 5 high-ranking personnel of theirs for 1 low-ranking person of theirs.

DonDiego apologizes for the error.

Oh, . . . and there's this:
"Sgt. Bergdahl wasn’t simply a hostage; he was an American prisoner of war captured on the battlefield. He served the United States with honor and distinction ... This is such a joyous day."__ National Security Adviser Susan Rice, 1 June 2014
Susan Rice is the Ron Burgundy of the Obama Administration, . . . put anything in front of her, and she'll read it on TV. If her incompetence was not potentially dangerous, she'd be funny.

n.b. For the record DonDiego favors free speech. He does not publish the above quotes to support censorship of any quotes or thoughts. DonDiego assumes they mean what they say; he disagrees with them. He does not know what the Administration is thinking. He suspects it is not something good.

Dude, how old are you?

Dude, are you the guy on this forum who used to claim that Hillary murdered Vince Foster and that Obama was born in Kenya? I mean, the resemblance is uncanny!

This really is an interesting situation.

So let's assume a soldier deserts and is captured on the battlefield by the enemy. Now we're five years on, and the President has credible evidence that the soldier's health is in serious peril. Let's also assume that the enemy is seeking the release of five of its most significant combatants in exchange for the soldier, and that they're held at Gitmo. And let's also assume that a federal statute says that the President must notify Congress at least 30 days before releasing anyone from Gitmo, including these five.

What should the President do? I think the President should secretly inform key Congressional leaders of what's afoot., but not let an opportunity to get our soldier out die simply because of the 30 day rule. That rule seems inconsistent with a President's responsibilities as Comander in Chief; it's unreasonable to expect him or her to prosecute a war while being micromanaged by the Congress like this.

Thoughts?

The President HAS to notify congress BEFORE hand, that is the law. Note: I did not say how long before the exchange takes place. However, unless the soldier is at or near immediate death, the notification of congress has to be done as far ahead as possible.

From what I understand they have been talking making a deal to get this guy out since last December. What changed where they had to get this guy released right this second? Remember that immediate death thingy, that guy looked healthy enough to walk to the Blackhawk. He wasn't at deaths door now was he?

Interesting thing that a soldier gets released just after the VA mess has come to a head....

Most folks don't like liars.

. . . DonDiego can point out the position of Senator Barack Obama on the matter in 2007: "I will not use signing statements to nullify or undermine congressional instructions as enacted into law."[...]

Perhaps The Obama has changed his mind on the matter...
DonDiego has an amazing grasp of the obvious!

But equally obvious, those here who accused Obama of illegality should have the minimal class to admit they were wrong.

Maybe Bergdahl was part of some complex misinformation scheme. Maybe he did walk away but did so under orders or with the knowledge of his commanding officers. Not everything is what it seems. Maybe there are things we don't know. I know it's shocking to think that the press doesn't know or report everything.

Lion, I acknowledge your courage and conviction. While we can argue about the virtues of prisoner swaps, there is no denying the bravery of a soldier that would rather stay a prisoner than let an enemy combatant go free.

I suppose it could be true that perhaps he was part of some scheme, if so, it sure is a shame six guys got killed looking for him and they sure didn't let his fellow soldiers in on it either, cause none of 'em are speaking very highly of Bergdahl.
