I was on "20/20 with Geraldo Riveras" for about 20 seconds in 1975 or so. The feature concerned a toddler's failure to thrive linked to defective formula. That was before Geraldo's famous treasure vault fiasco. Our doc had asked me "do you want to be on 20/20 with Geraldo?" I was overjoyed. Turned out our part was filmed in our hospital in Memphis, but Geraldo did his part from NYC. Oh well, I still had my 20 second TV career.

Pat Day, the jockey [retired, I guess] was on the plane when I flew to Dallas, connecting for Las Vegas. I was waiting outside the bathroom when Pat walked by. I called to him, he stopped and we talked a few minutes. He was real nice.

My father's step-cousin's grandfather, Capt. John T. Daniels, took the famous photo of the Wright brothers' first successful powered flight. The photo is in the Smithsonian.

I shook hands with Bill Clinton when, as Gov. of Arkansas, he toured our hospital on Veterans Day. Before he became President, before Monica, the dress, etc.

I talked with Hillary Clinton during a garden party for the Kidney Foundation at the Governors Mansion.

Had dinner at a table next to Joe Theisman's at Jack Binion's Steakhouse at the Horseshoe Tunica. He probably looked our way at some point. He was drop dead good lookin'. This was probably 1990 or so.

I played 3/5 play VP next to James Woods (The Shark; Lester Diamond in Casino) at Bellagio some years ago. He was very chatty and fun. I never let on I knew who he was 'cause I thought he might clam up or walk off if I acted star struck. I suggested he switch from DDB to DB. Right after he switched he hit for $800 and hugged me. You'd have thought it was a million, he was so excited.

I walked up to a craps table one afternoon at Caesar's Palace and got into a game going on that had about 5 players.... I look around after I get situated and see Joe Theisman at the other end...I say to myself "whoops"... "Never expected that".... How did I pick a table with a celebrity at it?

Anyhow, I lose my money alloted for that particular table and exit the game after just a few brief minutes... Joe looked good...The year believe it or not...around 1990.

Live in the Charlotte NC area... lots of NASCAR drivers around, you run into them all the time, just leave them alone and treat like anyone else, seem to appreciate that. Sorry Frankie Rizzo but no more autographs... hee hee

Mrs. Blade been a flight attendant for 35 years, lots of brushes with celebrities mainly on flight to/from LAX. She could write a book. A few good ones:

She got into it with Nancy Reagan sitting in seat 1A by the exit door, refused to put her carry-on in overhead during takeoff.

Ted Kennedy sleeping it off in first class, trying to wake him and push his legs out of the aisle so other passengers could board.

Jane Fonda: If she's on your flight, try to work/stay in the back of plane: ".... she is exactly what you've always thought she was."

Donna Douglas (Elly May Clampett): About the sweetest person you will ever meet. If she's on your flight it will be a great trip (always swap the Fonda flight for this one).

I was once on Bozo The Clown as a small child.

As a kid, I met many members of the Cincinnati Reds - Big Red Machine of the mid-70's; Johnny Bench, Dave Consepcion, Ken Griffey, George Foster, Dan Driessen, Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez.

As a teenager, I met Earle Bruce and Art Schlichter when attending the Ohio State Quarterback camp.

In Vegas, I've seen Michael Jackson being quickly whisked away with his huge entourage. Chatted with Gale Sayers for a few minutes - very nice guy. Saw Joe Montana and Dwight Clark at the Forum Shops - have also seen Pete Rose there several times. Saw nearly the entire crew of American Restoration when visiting Rick's Restorations last year (all except for Ron).
Grew up in the motion picture industry so new alot of stars (my dad was a big wheel at Universal). Been swimming at the Duke's house and rode the train at Walt's house. Even had Ronnie over to the house before he became governor. Part of the crew on many locations during college.
Live in Nashville now and am always running into stars (have a few for clients of my flower shop). Most are rather easy going and a smile is all the recognition you need to give.

Met Faye Dunaway (nice lady) at a restaraunt in Mass,
waited until we left to approach her when she was outside watching the ocean.
I asked for her autograph, producing a postcard of the restaraunt,
which she started to write on but made some mistake, so I was going to go inside and get another one,
but she insisted that this was the one I was getting, telling me that it would be more valuable.

Met Ray Borque (nice guy) former Boston Bruin.
Met Robert Parish (nice guy) former Boston Celtic.
Met many N.E. Patriot players after games when security was not like it is today.

Met Dick Smothers twice (nice guy) at The Orleans in Las Vegas.
We actually saw the very last show they did.

Met all the original Beach Boys (nice guys) years ago.
My band was one of the warm-up acts and we all actually shared the same hall area prior to performing.

Met Giada DeLaurentis (very nice) at a book signing. Have pictures of her and me.

I know there are more, but just can't recall them all at this time.

............Oh, and Yes I also saw Pete Rose in Vegas.

Rick
My best friend in jr. high is an NFL GM. I've never approached a celebrity because the last time I got excited about meeting one was when I was about 12 or 13.
Sometime in the late 60s on campus, young DonDiego shook Muhammad Ali's hand. It was during his exile [Muhammad Ali's exile, not DonDiego's] from boxing for claiming conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War. Several years later DonDiego was drafted and spent 3 years and 4 months in the US Navy, primarily defending Norfolk, Virginia.

DonDiego shook Astronaut "Rusty" Schweickart's hand, . . . and got his autograph.

DonDiego has played in blackjack tournaments at the same table against Celine Dion's husband. He has played against the famous gambler/bon vivant/celebrity Anthony Curtis, but never directly at the same table.
I waited tables in college and served lots of famous people. John Madden dozens of times. Others included Papa Costanza with Anne Meara, Jack Buck (he asked for directions), Michael Davis, Fred Stanley, Dave McKay and Tom Underwood of the Oakland A's, off top of my head.

Then I was a sports writer at a daily newspaper in San Francisco Bay Area fresh out of college so naturally had many encounters with athletes, coaches and managers.

Others: Have met Colin and Alma Powell (love them), C. Everett Koop. Rode an elevator with Gary Sheffield and his girlfriend at the St. Louis Adams-Mark hotel, where the Dodgers were staying. Observed a Tommy Lasorda and a harem at bar at same hotel.
My first brush with fame was as a young kid. A friend's father worked in the Naval shipyard in Boston and had tickets for the dedication of the JFK aircraft carrier. We went up to the bridge and I met and shook hands with Ted Kennedy. In kind of a weird twist, a short time after that, during the 1968 presidential campaign, George Wallace came to my home town and gave a speech. In fact he set up his staging on the street I lived on, about three blocks away. I met him after the speech and again shook his hand. Being 11-12 years ago I had no political ideas of any kind and only later realized that the two handshakes probably canceled each other out. lol
Most recently, in 2010, my wife and I were staying at the Grand Wailea resort in Maui while they were filming the movie "Just Go With It".
I met several of the stars of the movie. Had several conversations with Adam Sandler over the week or so we were there. He is an open, genuine person that I found very down to earth. I also met and talked with his mother and understand why he is that way. The most memorable meeting was sharing an elevator ride with Brooklyn Decker from the pool area while wearing a bikini (her, not me). What was most striking about the ride was the end. When the door opened I stepped out and held the door for her. She looked up, smiled and nodded thank you. What struck me most was her absolutely amazing eyes. They were sparkling aqua blue. They are the kind of eyes that make men do stupid things. lol
In between those encounters I've had a few more contacts with the famous. My most memorable one was meeting Andre the Giant. I met him in my college playing days and was considered a huge guy (6' 3", 300 lbs). I felt like a 6 year old when i shook his hand.

Spent a week at sea with Stephen Spielberg and Debbie Allen off the coast of Los Angeles during the filming of Amistad. Very nice man and very professional. Debbie was nice too. It is always good to find out celebs are as nice as you perceive them to be.

I will avoid getting on a plane with Jane Fonda though. Thanks for the heads up, Blade.
