What are some of your scary moments that you've encountered while in the line of duty? On the TV show the process server has been chased, have things thrown at him, sweared at, and a lot of different things. Do you get that as well? You must have grown to develop some thick skin in your line of work.
My best one was when I was trying to do a service on this young woman. Every time I was at her house, she ducked out the back door. well after 3 times, you can subserve anyone that answers the door. I knock and I hear the broad ducking out the back door again. But I didn't care, because a man answered the door and I knew I could serve him. So I ask for the woman, and he says she's not there. Yeah right! So I ask him who he is. He states he's her step father. Good enough for me. I tell him I'm sub serving him. So he won't take the papers. I told him I'd just leave them on the front lawn for his neighbors to read. I start walking back to the car, and dump the legal papers on the lawn. I had my girlfriend and some dogs in the car with me as it was the weekend and we were going to the beach. Next thing I know, the dogs are going nuts, and I turn around and see this guy charging at me. I turn around quickly and say, "Do you want a piece of me?" He stopped in his tracks and said he was going back inside to get his gun. By this time I had already reached the car, and I sat down in my seat and reached under the seat. I said to him, "I'll wait here, and we'll see who's is bigger!" After 10 minutes, he never came out, so I left. I waited down the street only to see him come out and pick up the legal papers.
I had one other problem with a security guard that was being sued for beating up illegals. I knocked on his door, and a kid answered. When I walked inside, I could see a man asleep on the couch. I thought this was the guy I had to serve, so I called out his name. Well, a voice yelled out from upstairs, "What did I want?" I asked him is he was Mr. X. He said he was and what the f*ck did I want. I told him I had papers to serve on him and his son. He came storming down the stairs and asked me what I was doing in his house. I told him I was let in by the kid. He told me to get the f8ck out of his house. He thought he was going to intimidate me, but I gave him the papers anyway and started out of the house. But this guy really pissed me off, and I really wanted a piece of him. I walked slowly out of the house while he kept giving me some bullshit about why I was in his house. well first of all, a process server can legally trespass if they feel the person they are going to serve is located at that location.
Well this guy follows me all the way out to my car giving me BS all the way. When he threatened me, I told him I was going to take his head off and there was nothing he could do about it. I told him that I could kill him in two moves....maybe 3 for a guy his size, but he kept on pushing it. His son in the meantime went back in the house for a gun. I flat out told the MF'er that hitting me was the same thing as hitting a cop, which it is. He then backed off and said he was going to call the police. I told him I would wait right there as I probably know half the Vista police force, and I know who's side they'd be on. I got in my car and slowly reached under the seat to make sure my safety was off in case his son got cute. I drove away with nothing else happening except the guy yelling at me to impress his neighbors. But these are only two experiences within a 15 year period.
