Tipping at table games,Am I too Generous$

I was reading about tipping at the poker tables on another side of LVA.
I am appalled at how little people tip or how cheap some people are. The members were talking about dealers at a poker table. The tips were $ 1 and $2 if the pot was "Huge" You have got to be kidding me. If I was at a table and I hit for $500 I slip over a $20 and say thanks. Is this too much?
I play roulette and if I hit a hard number for a 35x pay I give the dealer the amount of the bet on that number because the chips stay on that number after the win.
Is it me ? Too generous ? I do not like showing people up but please let's be real in tipping appropiately .
This thread has potential.

Let the "fun" begin.

I guess I can answer this from both sides of the coin, as a player and a dealer. I love to get $20 tips from players, even though I have to put them in the pool, but I love to get the $1-2 tips as well. It all depends on how you are doing at the tables. Are you winning when you make that big hit? Did the dealer point out something that you might have missed because you were distracted? As for myself, I would rather have that money in action so I have the chance to win more, but in poker that is out of the question. As a craps dealer I want to be in action with you so when I win, you win (so you bet again for me later). I prefer that you piggy-back my bet on yours so I'm in action for more than one bet. If the shooter gets hot, I make a lot more money and It dosen't cost you any more to put me back up. If you're tipping, I want you to be in the game as long as I can keep you there.

As a player, it's the same thing. I want the dealers in the game so they are rooting for me to win (so I bet again for them later). I piggy-back their bets on mine so they try to call the good numbers. As the roll progresses, I add a dollar or two to their bet when I press my bet so they win more money too.

Here's the bottom line. If you think that a $20 tip was too much, then it might have been. If you make a $20 tip and don't think another thing aboout it, it was the right amount.

Good luck,

I used to play Blackjack and craps and I too bet for the dealers, but the way at blackjack I tip I would first put a bet for the dealer on top of mine, If I won I would ask them if they wanted to put it out front (where they would get two for one or just take it) or if they wanted it. This way the house paid for the tips for the dealer, this worked great if I got on a good run. Lot of time at the end of play the dealer would have more money than I would. I guess thats one reason I quit, besides the people always would get mad and puting the blame on the dealer for them losing. At craps I always like the other poster said I let them play with me or I would ask them where they wanted the money. I would hate to sit or stand their all day and not get to play. If I was a dealer, and lots of times when the shooter sevened out my money would stay on the table. Some people dont tip, they dont even tip the poor waiter but maybe they dont have the money. I would not order a drink if I couldnt tip the waiter. I go a lot to the casinos here in tunica and have gotten to know most of the people serving (when the girls at the buffett know your pen I guess that means you go too much) and they have told me a lot of times they would just make very little. I have several friends that are bartenders and I noticed that a lot of the machines just would have 1-2 coins in play on the screen, my friends say that the people just sit and drink and dont tip.

Can't talk poker as I don't play. Craps is my primary table game. I toss chips out while I play telling dealers to take it or bet it. When I color up, I leave chips "for the boys." The amount reflects how well I did that night. The better I did, the better the tip, but I always leave an ending tip in addition to the ones throughout the night.

Good Luck!

I pretty much tip at Roulette the same as you do. When I hit a straight up number, I tip the size of my bet, on average. I may tip every other hit if I am not doing well or tip a little more if I am doing very very well and the dealer is placing bets for me when I am wayyyy at the end of the table and can't reach.

playing BJ, when i tip, I will always place a bet for the dealer rather than just giving them the chip. That way if I don't win, they don't win. And yes, I do realize that the sealer does not affect which cards come out. but still.....
I tip one unit per dealer rotation, so if I'm playing with a $10 unit thats what I tip. On a $5 table, my tip is $5.
At live poker games, the standard tip is $1 a hand. But the typical pot in poker might only be $20 or $30. And yes, in larger pots larger tips are acceptable and pretty much the norm. On a $500 pot? I think the biggest pot I ever won at a live game was about $400 or so, and I tipped $15 which was in the 3-4% range.

Compare that to a $1250 VP win... I tip $10 for that. And that is less than 1%.
On a $20,000 royal in VP, all of the gaming writers suggest a $100 tip which is one-half of one percent. If youre generous a $200 tip is 1%.

At craps, percentages really can get wild. If I am at a $25 game and I am shooting and just made a pass, on the next come out roll I will bet $10 for the dealers. If my next come out roll is a natural, the dealers get $20, and the $10 passline bet that I made for them represented 40% of the bet I placed for myself. the percentages even get wilder when you make a hardway bet for the dealers. On the few occassions when Im having a monster roll Ive bet all the place numbers for the dealers ($52 or $54 across) with "player controls" meaning that the dealers take the wins.

the single biggest tip I ever made was $600 when I hit a $37-thou VP progressive. $500 to the floor people and $100 to the technician who verified that the chip in the machine was not tampered with.
To the very pretty cocktail waitress in the skimpy costume:

"Do you see this One dollar bill?"
"Yes"
"In an effort to impress you, I just want you to know that it can be yours, if you return with my drinks in under 3 minutes."

I'm generally not tipping unless I'm on a roll then I'll be making some hardways bets for the boys. I end covering all of the hardways at $5 per (I've already hit a few at this point so I generally have at least $10 -$15 per hardways bets out there).

The most I've put out there for the boys is about $50 on each hardways, not including my own bets.
