Tipping limo driver.

Well, itipping.com isn't what I was looking for, since it does not even purport to be by experts, or even provide any sources for the amounts quoted.

And no, I don't think that $1.50-$2.00 is high for a $10.00 cab ride. I do think, however, that $7.50-$10.00 on a $50.00 ride is too high.

Keep in mind that, unlike restaurant servers, cab drivers aren't paid sub-minimum wages. A $50.00 cab ride takes what, 20 minutes? An $8.00 tip equates to $24 an hour just for the tip! Depending on the situation, the cab driver probably also gets to keep at least half of the fare.

To me, a $50.00 fare is worth a $5.00 tip, maybe a couple dollars more if the service was especially good.

Before anyone starts calling me a cheapskate, I typically tip close to 20% on a good meal, including the price of drinks. I think that's only fair, since the server is only making $2.18 an hour.

I just don't think that a ride in a dirty car with a surly/uncommunicative driver is worth a 15-20% tip.

itipping.com is a reputable site. They don't just pull the percentages out of their butts.
Google tipping etiquette and you will find many site all that agree with the 15-20%.

I'm not saying that it's not reputable, but there's a difference between reputable and authoritative. And I did Google the question. What I discovered was that some sites say 15-20%, some say 15%, and some say 10-15%. None of them, however, offer any back up for their numbers. What I strongly suspect is that these sites are cribbing off of each other, which is what commonly happens on the internet. Just because lots of sites have the same information that doesn't make it accurate.

My impression is that someone asked people who provide that service what they think they should be tipped, and then reported that percentage. If someone asked me what I should be tipped, I would probably say 15% too, and I don't even work in a profession that traditionally gets tips.

Here's the problem that I have with the percentage. Taxi and limo drivers already make a living wage. Restaurant servers do not; they make sub-minimum wage because they traditionally are tipped 15% on the total bill. They also provide (or are supposed to provide) substantial personal service. Tipping taxi and limo drivers 15-20% doesn't make sense to me when: (1) that percentage is more than what is traditionally paid to restaurant servers; (2) drivers already make a higher basic wage than restaurant servers; (3) driving a taxi or limo is less physically demanding than being a restaurant server; and (4) more often than not, taxi drivers (not so much limo drivers) are unfriendly and surly.
Well guys it's a moot point. I am renting a van. Got an original price of $287 for the week then checked Costco last night and it had dropped to $187. Its all coming together and I am taking the girls to Ellis Island for dinner and most likely belagio conservatory.
