Tips For Sleeping On A Plane

Nobody has ever tipped me for sleeping on an airplane. And I'm really good at it. Perhaps I should set out a little cup, or a guitar case.

My husband is also very good at it, usually asleep with head against the window before the plane begins to back away from the jetbridge!

I'm the same way...a window seat so I have something other than another passenger to lean my head on, and for some reason as soon as the engines fire up, I'm ready for a nap.

A trick i've learned is to take the redeye either Friday or Saturday nite. Fewer people on plane generally means an empty seat next to you and more room to stretch out. That said, I rarely do more than dooze off.

Years ago we would purposely book the redeye flight home, to have more gambling time that last day without paying for another night (in the days before comps). And the flight was cheaper.

But, this became torture after a few years. Sleep was fitful at best, and by the time the plane landed in Dallas for a plane change, I felt like I'd been beaten with a stick. I said "never again", and I haven't.

For me, it is a given that I'll sleep most of the next day. I get in around 5AM, get home a little after 6AM, half hour to sort mail and go to bed. Flying out on Sat night as opposed to Sunday afternoon, I save the hotel expense, skip the longer security lines and often save a few dollars on the plane itself.
Getting a Saturday nite comped ,for me, is a challenge. In the decade or so since first reading comp City, I think I've paid for five or six nights in Vegas, all of them Saturday. This coming trip, i'm there from Jan 26 to Feb 22 and am paying for one night- the last Saturday before I leave.
I understand Redeyes are not everyones cup of tea. Thats why they are often empty and cheaper.

Uh, so how can you determine this?
Have never seen "Non-riff-raff" pricing listed. LOL

Give it time, if they can figure a fee out they'll do it...no doubt in my mind. HAHA.

My best advice for sleep on an airplane is for the flight home after a vegas trip. Party hard, see a bunch of shows, prowl the strip and Fremont, stay up incredibly late and wake up incredibly early because, well, just because, that slot or table game is due to hit any time now, eat to your heart's content. Then, exhausted from the trip, you'll nap easily on the way home.

I did this once, (well maybe twice...or three times, don't remember) But the one time I did it, we had like a noon flight and I of course woke up in the middle of the night. This is the only time we've ever scored first class tix on the way home mind you, I really was looking forward to the flight home. Anyway, I got up about 3, give or take, and proceed down to the casino and found a hoppin' craps table. Actually, the only thing happening in the casino, so I join the table.

Played and played,up and down and mind you I am a complete amateur at craps, but I had this awesome Asian kid on my right and an extreemelt cool black kid on my left and they were helping me tremendously. I got on a coupla lo-oong rolls..., Fun. My new friends were even placing bets for me . Wife startyed calling about 7, not now honey, plenty of time (my wife is one of those who freaks about getting to the airport early, like 4 hours early! Not kidding she would if I didn't talk her out of it, but 3 is the minimum.

Anyway I continued to drink and play, drink, roll, drink have fun, play, etc.. Wife finally dragged me away from the table. To make a short story long, the first class ride home I had looked forward to ended up being nothing of the sort. I remember getting a glass of cham-pag-nee and a warm blanket and that was it. Wife woke me up after we landed and not sure I remember the drive home either.

Living in NY, Jet Blue now flies direct. When I started flying out 15 years ago, Delta had stop overs either in Dallas or Cincinnati. There is little worse than a three hour layover in the middle of the night.
For a short time we had a "red eye" returning from Vegas to Indy. It left about midnight or 1pm as I recall. It was may favorite flight home, since in those days we returned on the Monday after Labor Day and returned to work the next day. This gave me hours and hours of watching Gilligan's Island and the such before I returned to work on Tuesday.

I don't sleep well on planes, but after 12 hours of drinking, I would fall asleep before takeoff and wake on touchdown.
