transportation from freemont to strip

We have never stayed downtown in the 25 some trips to Vegas. However we would like to stay there this March. Freemont is great but we also enjoy the shows and entertainment on the strip. My concern is traveling to and from. Last year taxies run about $25 one way. Are there other ways we can see all of Vegas and save us a couple hundred bucks.
Vegas rental cars tend to be inexpensive. Valet parking at most casinos are free.

I always rent a car. www.carrental.com is generally the cheapest.
You can take buses, or a free shuttle will take you from downtown to Sams Club, where you can catch another shuttle to Harrahs. Very time consuming, but free.

Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Express

DonDiego has always found one meets/observes more interesting people on a bus too.

For 2 riders - single trip bus tickets will save you a little money over a cab but not much....and if your show is at the Luxor you better give yourself a 50 minute head start. But the bus is a fun way to see the strip.
If you divided your stay between Downtown and The Strip,
then you would have only one fare, that being between those two places.
Then you leave from your second hotel for the airport,
which you would have to take anyway, along with the initial cab fare when you arrive.
Got all that ???

We stay downtown all the time as we get free rooms, free food, free play - feel the casinos value our patronage better than the strip casinos ( and we are only lowly minimum bet penny slot players ). If we want to go to the strip we get a 24 hour bus pass (or you can get 3 day one, etc) and catch the bus. We have never had an unpleasant experience or any problems finding a bus stop.
We always rent a car as well. Billy R is correct, carrentalsavers.com is the absolute cheapest site to rent a car. It's always been my experience anyway, regardless of city. We've never tried the bus, but did taxi everywhere one time, it was pretty expensive. A car gives one the freedom to go where and when they want.
On my last Vegas trip I rented a car, which is unusual. Two days before leaving to Vegas, I checked Costco even though I didn't have a membership. I was able to save $55 on this site vs all others that I checked, so I bought a $65 membership.

Either way, have fun in Vegas.
