I think that the main difference is that at home if you lose your wallet you can go to your bank and get more money. In Vegas that is a lot more difficult - my credit card was rejected following a computer glitch 2 years ago - major problem.
If you lose travelers cheques just present the stub to an office of the issuer - or even do it over the phone - and your new cheques are there next day. Lose a preloaded card and you have a lot more problems.
To me, that is the difference
