trip to ely, nv

If you like little out of the way places, a trip to Ely and Great Basin NP will be worth your while. I wouldn't go there just to gamble though since there are only a few places that have casinos. I agree that you should stay at the Hotel Nevada. It's a real kick back to the old west. If you are going in March, there will still be snow at the higher elevations at Great Basin. We went once for Halloween and had a blast. The Northern Nevada railroad has a haunted train-lots of fun.
is the hotel nevada like a bed and breakfast? you know, a shared bathroom?
Went to Ely a few times in the late 90's/early 2000's to see a friend who was doing 10 years in the slammer. The state pen is the biggest business in Ely. When he was released we all met in Reno. I prefer Reno.

I've driven through Ely many times on my way to Las Vegas from the PNW. I have been there at all times of year. Ely sits at the base of a mountain range/national forest. Lots of outdoor adventures in the very scenic surrounding areas.

It is almost always really windy in Ely. A good windbreaker or fleece is a must if you're going in March. Snow is not uncommon at that time of year. Prepare for mountain driving and possible chain requirements for your tires.

No, it is a hotel where each room has their own bathroom. I must say it was the smallest bathroom I have ever been in. I believe at one time the Hotel Nevada was the tallest hotel in Nevada at six stories. It is old and tiny, but definitely has character.
We like to go other places too when we are in Vegas.

I hope you go to Ely and post pictures. Have fun and I say go and enjoy yourself and let us know how you make out.
We went to Ely on Memorial Day this year. We weren't planning on staying, but it was a white out blizzard on that Sunday. We stayed at a GREAT hotel out side of town; has lots of old Nevada memorabilia and the slots are ok. I'm a VP player and it was ok. This hotel is PAST the Hotel Nevada. Stay on that main road and no more than 3 miles out of downtown you'll see it on the left its the Prospector Hotel. EXPECT SNOW. We'll we didn't the last of May and we were stranded. Lots of mountain switchbacks en route to Ely from Fallon/Reno; not as many from Vegas to Ely. But get a truck or 4WD and go slowly; not much room for error, esp in the snow.

Elko has NOTHING. Fallon is nice. The Lincoln Highway (Rt 50) is the Lonliest Highway in America and you'll be on that if you're going to Ely from Fallon. There is a Pine Co museum between the Prospector hotel and downtown. You'll enjoy it and admission is very cheap. Takes about 20minutes to go thru. There's a nice diner on the same side of the road (Rt 50) as the Prospector; food is wonderful. One of the casino/hotels downtown is a rebuild of the old jailhouse there in Ely its very cool. The jail cells are private dining areas, now. Look at all of the old casinos in town, they're really cool. All of them have historic Nevada memorabilia in them, everywhere. I think you'll enjoy the town, esp if you don't stay in the old hotels, lol.
I have to dispute that "Elko has NOTHING". The Red Lion is the nicest place between Reno and Wendover.
OK, Mel, we didn't love Elko. Mea culpa
