Turning Back The Clock: The Sands

I just love looking at pics and stories about the Las Vegas of old.

Amen to that, brother!

Hey nice link and "thanks for the memories"
What memories, the Sands was long Old Las Vegas at its best. Spent much time there, liked the rather small intimate casino, and the racebook was my top choice, with low level comps easy to earn. Each trip would be sure to obtain a coupon and get one of the Sands coffee cups. They must have given away tens of thousands of them over the years. Most of them I gave away to friends, but still have five or six. One of them is my regular cup, as I type these words it is sitting a foot away, half empty with my second cup of the morning.

My wife's aunts knew the casino manager there and always wound up staying there when they went to Vegas. I was just posting in another forum about how I went there for Doc's Big 10 Game of the Year.

When I won a contest back in 1969, I took my first trip to Vegas. We had a dinner show every night we were there. First night was the topless show at the Stardust. 2nd night we had a dinner show at the Sands. Dianne Carroll was one of two acts. The 2nd act we walked out on and went into the casino. Stopped by the dice pit and saw a woman put $5 on boxcars so she could eat dinner. Two sixes came out on that roll. Later on we heard a big commotion at another dice pit, and went to see what was going on. Seems that two guys from NY were on a hot roll and were up $80,000. Next day we heard that they cashed in over $100,000.

In those days, everyone was dressed to the "nines", especially on Friday and Saturday nights. There were rumors going around that young girls in their twenties, who had regular weekly jobs, were coming to Vegas to turn tricks for extra income.
The room that starred the Rat Pack at the Sands is now rumored to be in the same area of the Venetian where the Grand Lux Cafe is located.

Interesting story Bag's. Would have loved to see what Vegas was like back then!

I will post some other hotels later!
