I was thinking the same thing PJ - you took the words right out of my mouth. Twinkes made in China might have lead in the food coloring especially the pink snowballs.

Be on the lookout for an upcoming YouTube clip....

Diet Coke shot out of my nose this afternoon while listening to CNBC in the car. Bill Griffeth was explaining to Maria Bartiromo that part of Hostess's problem is that nobody eats that stuff anymore.
Bill asked Maria, "When's the last time you had a ding-dong?"
...followed by a very awkward moment of silence.. and then some giggling from others in the immediate area. Maria didn't touch that one.

Oh man, I watch CNBC a good bit and really bummed I missed that one, that is fricken' HILARIOUS! I'll definitely be watching for a youtube clip. Holy sh!t, too funny.

J

Maria should have replied "Bill, when was the last time you had a Ho-Ho?"
It's over.

"Hostess Brands says it is going out of business, closing plants that make Twinkies and Wonder Bread and laying off all of its 18,500 workers."

Ref: The Washington Post

If the reader is in the market for a bakery or, perhaps, the recipe and brand-name of the Twinkie the opportunity to bid will arrive soon.

Is the manufacturing of Twinkies and Ding Dongs really "necessary to the welfare of America's citizens"???

Now "Moon Pies", that's a different story.
The liquidation process begins today.

By the bakers not accepting an 8% pay cut, all the employees face a 100% pay cut

If one is interested in purchasing an industrial-size bakery, these 33 are now available:
Birmingham, AL; Anchorage, AK, Los Angeles ,CA (2), Oakland, CA, Sacramento, CA; Denver, CO; Jacksonville, FL, Orlando; FL; Columbus, GA; Hodgkins, IL; Peoria, IL; Schiller Park, IL; Columbus, IN, Indianapolis, IN, Waterloo, IA, Emporia, KS; Lenexa, KA, Alexandria, LA, Biddeford, ME; Boonville, MO; Billings, MT; Henderson, NV; Wayne, NJ; Rocky Mount, NC; Defiance, OH; Northwood, OH; Tulsa, OK; Philadelphia, PA; Knoxville, TN: Memphis, TN; Ogden, UT; Salt Lake City, UT

565 retail outlets from coast to coast are also up for grabs.
Everybody just relax ! Ripplewood Holdings will be just fine. After buying Hostess in 2004 and slashing worker salaries/benefits - the private equity firm took out a 700 million dollar loan in part to pay themselves for their services. Ultimately the hole left by Ripplewood's services was too expensive for the company to pay back without making even more cuts to worker salaries and benefits...and so here we have it.

But dont worry - the private equity turnaround specialists at Ripplewodd will be fine. Just fine. Seems like I've heard this story before somewhere.
Maybe someone from Ripplewood will run for president some day?

__"Necessary to the welfare of America's citizens"? That is an interesting question. DonDiego opines "Yes". But others may suggest otherwise, . . . even that Twinkies may have an adverse impact on citizens' well-being. Poppycock!

And anyway, the same argument can be made about any product or industry. The automobile industry, to choose one at random, produces pollution and kills tens-of-thousands of citizens in accidents every year. Yet it allows families the opportunity to visit Grandma and Grandpa on Thanksgiving. The handgun industry produces a product which may result in well-being to someone located behind the grips and ill-being to someone located in front of the barrel.

One man's necessity is another man's dread.

__ DonDiego agrees that MoonPies [AKA "The Working Man's Lunch"] are necessary to the welfare of America's citizens. And they are made right heh' in Appalachia up at the Chattanooga Bakery.
Oh, . . . DonDiego suggests everyone attend the famous Moon Pie Drop on New Year's Eve in Mobile, AL. It is certainly on DonDiego's bucket list.
