University of Oklahoma fraternity caught singing a racist chant

Forkie is jealous because not one wanted him.

I saw the chant on HLN today for the first time. I hadn't seen it until today. (Didn't open malibber2's link.)

I am ashamed that these punks walk the same planet with me.

Every student who participated should be expelled and subsequently disqualified from entering any college or university anywhere from here on.
They are bullies at the least and sociopaths at worst.
I'm guessing they were raised as privileged kids, or conversely were abused or bullied themselves to a degree that nourished any underlying narcissism and sociopathic tendencies.
And they must be unbelievably stupid as well, like, do they know anything about civilization?
How you treat other people?
How did they get into college? Daddy's money?
In my day it took good grades and evidence of character (had to get references from the preacher, neighbor, teacher, etc.).
Or a legacy daddy with money.

I suspect their parents will defend them... "he is a good boy".
I hope they are happy to have thrown good money after their rotten kids' futures as grown up bullies who will eventually return home to terrorize them and deplete their resources.

Social frats and sororities are exclusionary by design.
While this is ugly beyond description, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that some have decayed into this kind of moral depravity.

As reprehensible as these guys are, isn't a state run University charged with protecting freedom of speech?

Well, if that is protected speech, the world is in trouble.
I don't know if protected speech includes racial slurs spoken on behalf of a university fraternity and its selection criteria.

It may be protected in that the speaker perhaps cannot be legally prosecuted for using the slurs publicly.

At the least, the jerks publicly announced their intended exclusions based on race to acceptance in their fraternity.
Probably, certainly, not official on-the-books exclusions, but their intent to do so.

Close it down. Expel the participants. In fact, Expel anyone who uses the N Word on or off campus.
I don't believe that O2bn understands protected speech. I don't believe that a state government can legally take away benefits (state subsidized school) because they disagree with one's speech topic.

One either is for free speech or one is not. O2bnVegas, unfortunately is not.

Public schools and other institutions are allowed to have their own code of conduct rules that limit free speech.

Would Boilerman allow for courts to have defendants call the judge racial slurs? Or allow students to wear bikini's in school? Or have teachers flaunt their "Vote for Obama" pin in class?

All three are legal under the US Constitution.

I'll have to consider this further. PJ brings up good points.

What's wrong with allowing [female] students to wear bikinis in school ? . . . or anywhere else, for that matter?

Just so.

DonDiego considered the free speech issue before endorsing the University's decision to ban the fraternity from campus. He concluded that political free speech should be pretty nearly beyond any Government interference, but some speech is simply unacceptable and subject to prohibition. The National Fraternity Organization has already shut done the University of Oklahoma chapter. Hey! It's only Oklahoma after all.

DonDiego is not of the opinion that this particular act deserves any more significant punishment; e.g. the students should not be expelled. Fraternity Boys singing a bawdy song with racist lyrics should not receive a life altering punishment.
