Up in Smoke

Amazing that no one has posted that they are a smoker (of cigarettes). Revel tried to be the first non-smoking casino in AC, and has now changed their tune, as most people would not play there.

By the way, I am a smoker.
I'm guessing the percentage of smokers divided by the number of people who gamble is much higher than the percentage of smokers to the total population (only taking population of majority age).

Bob, thank you for posting this. I have never trusted the Government anti-tobacco propaganda. Never. It just never made sense to me how the USDA on one hand could recommend high consumption of some leafy products (I.e. spinach, lettuce, cabbage) and on the other hand scare us about consuming tobacco leaves. No sense at all.

I have never smoked but now I am rethinking my position on is matter. Thank you.

Well said, Ellen. I have never trusted any of the government propaganda regarding our health. I mix asbestos with my tobacco to make my cigarettes last longer....
Yes. I smoke, and also occasionally use an e-cig instead.

As a frequent poker player, (and none of my local poker rooms allow smoking inside), I find that the "better" games (for me) are the rooms with the shortest distance to a smoking area exit.

When some rooms did allow smoking, those rooms had (IMHO) far superior games, specifically due to more "fish". My hypothesis is that smokers "gamble it up" much more than non-smokers, and are somewhat more "reckless" with their money.

And my "old" poker diaries confirm this to me, but are not scientific quality data suitable for analysis.

I've also noticed (locally) that some VP machines in the "NO Smoking" room have lesser pay tables than the same games on the general casino floor. I've pondered whether the "no smoking" slots may also be set at a higher house advantage as well.

I hypothesize that non-smokers, (as a demographic in general) risk significantly less when they gamble. Perhaps due to better self control?

::: shrug :::

My confession may well help RoadTrip prove his interesting theory... I only smoke when I gamble
I quit smoking 4 years ago and have no problem with cravings/withdrawls. I really enjoyed smoking and did not want to quit, but the outrageous cost and family/peer pressure (I'm in the medical field) was just too much, so I quit and remain a non - smoker until I walk into a casino. I enjoy smoking and gambling 2 - 5 times a year and have no problem going back to being a non smoker when I return to reality

I really like playing poker with the smokers. The longer they go without a smoke the more nervous, reckless and prone to mistakes they are. But then again, they sure do stink.

When I smoked I always had to have my seat at whateer game I was playing all set up as soon as I sat down, cigs and lighter sitting in front of me along with an ashtray and a beer next to 'em. I always tried to get an end seat, less smoke for the people playing and a bit more room. I would always smoke like a fiend whenever gambling, not sure why just seemed to work out that way.
