Vegas trivia

What Vegas hotel has the largest freestanding sign in the world? It was built in 1997 at a cost of $9 million dollars and it stands 279 feet tall. The sign boasts over six miles of neon and fluorescent lights, a total surface area of more than 70,000 square feet, and it's 40' thick.

Yes indeed!

Extra Credit
Before construction of the Las Vegas Hilton sign in 1997 there was once a sign that was larger.
Where was it?

I do know that the sign previous to the present one was larger but you could be speaking of another. My vote would be for the same location at an earlier time.
was it the Stardust sign? I really, really miss the 'dust
