Video Lottery Terminal

A new "Racino" has opened in our area and they have VLT machines. I remember reading about this format on the LVA quite some time ago. I know that the machines share a common terminal and the odds are not very good but with video poker I can't remember if the first selection determines the outcome. I think that I recall that the VLT format sucks VS stand alone machines. Am I right?
No doubt an expert on the subject will come along, however, if I recall correctly with VLT you are playing against the other folks in the casino to win from a pool of possible wins vs the stand alone machines which in most cases have chips embedded in each machine which determines a winning or loosing outcome for that machine.
