Voter IDs

I vote for more Fremont!
I vote for less rice.
Mali, I must admit, you never fail to amaze me. And I don't mean that in a good way. Republican voter fraud and you cite Wis.freaking.consin??? Like Wisconsin is a Republican stronghold! You gotta admit a Chicago area conservative has a lotta trouble with that one.

Easy Forkie? Yes it is. Prove your identity and show your registration to vote. Hey, let's all get behind the idea of ending Republican voter fraud!
How many years has little Scotty Walker and his goons been in charge? It was he and his cohorts that enacted this troublesome ID scheme not Democrats. Of course they have enacted this to try and maintain Republican control by keeping Democrats away from the voting booth.

That's the cool thing about dealing with a nonexistent problem. There are so many ways to fix it!

But I'm sure you would allow people to use their existing ID's that have been highly vetted, you know like public college and university identification and food stamp ID. EVERYONE else would have to go through your sometimes laborious process to get the proper ID, right?

Just kidding. That would be just as unfair as giving a pass to everyone who is licensed to drive a car. Favoring any demographic group when it comes to voting is disgraceful and un-American, and I'm sure no one here would want any part of it.
Anyone who doesn't have an ID and wants to vote should be helped to get an ID. It's a pretty simple concept. It helps them. It helps assure fair elections. It's a win/win.

Whether or not it's been a problem in the past, it just isn't unreasonable to ask a voter for identification. Just because you've never been robbed doesn't mean it's smart to leave your garage door open or your house unlocked. We should be smart enough to figure out how to assure a person is who he claims when voting without suppressing anyone's vote.
"Anyone who doesn't have an ID?" So anyone with food stamp, college student, or union membership identification should automatically qualify, while everyone else should have to go through some sort of hassle?

No, that would be unfair. NO ONE should have a head start in the process. Even people who drive cars.

In my opinion, the real problem isn't that it's unfair. It's that the process to get an ID isn't very efficient. Fix that and the 99% of the non-problem goes away. Democrats should be happy because everyone who wants to vote gets to vote. Republicans should be happy they don't needlessly have to fret about voter fraud. Poor voters who don't have ID get to vote and get a nice new ID that will help them in other aspects of their lives. Everyone wins. Except Democrats and Republicans who just want to bitch at each other and not solve problems.

Of course we can even add in the Canadian alternate process. If you are too poor or busy or lost your ID or just can't get it together enough to get an acceptable ID.....whatever, You can have another voter take an oath and vouch for you. You just both need to make a sworn statement. I'm Ok with that too.

They must take their voting seriously in Canada...and you don't hear about 'voter suppression' up there.

You assume their real motivation is voter fraud, and not trimming the voter rolls of voters that are likely to vote for Democrats. Your entire premise is wrong. Demographics are shifting away from the Republican party, so the only way for them to win is finding more and more ways to keep Democratic voters away from the polls.

Sidebar question: How many of you go to the polls to vote? I haven't in more than a decade. Here, 70 percent of registered voters are on the Permanent Early Voting list and participate by mail. I voted two weeks ago from my recliner.
Another sidebar question...How many of you who actually go to the polls to vote actually don't have ID?

Well if that's 'their' only motivation then they're not very patriotic. Good thing there aren't any voter ID laws in democrat controlled states, right?

Now I think it's good for as many people as possible to legally vote. I think it's also a good thing to help voters who need IDs to get IDs. And I think there should be controls so only lawful voters vote. And we should never suppress any lawful voter's vote. So there's a lot of work to be done.

Clean up the voter roles. Get every voter an ID...use some technology. Unfortunately, the bureaucrats running many of our voting operations are about 20 years behind the DMV in their effectiveness....so there'd have to be some changes there too.

Of course in Switzerland, men can identify themselves as freemen allowed to bear arms and vote by simply showing their sword. Women still have to show a voting card though. Hey! Maybe we could just bring our guns as proof of voting eligibility.

Alan, It is not people on the LVA that don’t have IDs. It is primarily poor people that don’t have IDs. If you are poor, chances are you can’t afford a car. In most states to have a license (photo ID) you must buy car insurance. Car insurance companies require you to have a car before you buy insurance. Poor people can’t afford to buy a car and car insurance just to get an ID. Other sources of ID that they require to get a photo ID are typically utility bills in your name showing your physical address. If you don’t own a home, those are impossible to get in a lot of cases. So, let’s not play games and pretend it is about voter fraud. It is about keeping "certain" people from voting. The state of Texas voter ID law alone prevents more than 900,000 people from voting that have the legal right to vote because they lack the proper ID. Alan what type of documents would you require people to present so they could get one of your free photo IDs?
