The Wall

Here's how I view negotiations on the wall, and foreign trade.

1. We need to wall, and the problem is caused by Mexico. They should pay. They have far more to lose with a nasty trade deal than America (90% of their exports go to the US), although it's bad for both parties. I believe that Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto will blink first. If he doesn't blink quickly, then Trump will impose tariffs and Mexico will blink later. You never know, however.

2. Trade deals with Asian countries, best I can tell, are not fair. This battle with Mexico is meant to soften up Japan and especially the Chinese. Again, both of those countries have far more to lose than we do, putting Trump in a position of negotiating power. I suspect that Trump will negotiate better deals in the future, but you never know.

3. Trump intentionally comes off as a loose cannon in an effort to scare the competition. Understand, however, that words aren't enough, as Obama proved again and again. If Trumps threatens, and he will, he'd better will willing to make good on his threats. Trump is hoping that Mexico doesn't immediately blink, so he can put some pain to them. That'll help soften up Japan and China.

The Liberal media doesn't have a clue, and please understand that they've called every GOP president in my lifetime a dunderhead. These Liberal media types come with an agenda, and they're not to be trusted.

Shouldn't the tax be on what Mexico imports from us, making the Mexicans pay 20% more for the goods they buy? Or at least on the goods American companies export to Mexico, raising the price of the stuff in Mexico? Instead, they propose raising the price of Mexican beer, tequila and fruit by a fifth to us.
Thank Gawd we know Trump is looking out for us, otherwise this would look suspiciously like a royal screwing.

The overall idea is to artificially raise the price of Mexican imports. Then, American products (or imports from other countries) will be cheaper and will be purchased instead of Mexican products. This will (supposedly) hurt the Mexican economy and Mexico will get on it's knees to Trump and say "Por favor Sr. Trump, aquí es todo nuestro dinero, usted puede construir la pared ahora."
Well, at least that's how the Ego-in-chief see's it.
But that doesn't make it a bad idea. It's a good idea actually. A VERY good idea. HUGE. Huge idea.

And Trump really is looking out for the American people. He just has a really bad public delivery problem, otherwise known as his mouth. But the business models and proposals are sound and proven.

How much money do illegal aliens spend in the economy each year....and spend in local taxes? Good luck finding an economist on either side of the aisle that will tell you removing 11 million people is of any financial benefit to the economy and tax base.

I dont really see how a wall stops people from legally entering the country with a passport and then not leaving....which is how most illegals get and stay here. But if the wall makes Republicans sleep better at night then I dont object so long as they pay for it....... oops - they're not paying for it.

You mean this immigration policy?

I'm shocked I tell you, absolutely shocked that Billy has said nothing about Mexico's policy of keeping neighbors to their south out.

Liberals have argued.......well, forever it seems, that high taxation and the general high cost of producing stuff in America doesn't chase American business overseas. In contrast, a model of additional taxation on Mexican goods will chase away Mexican business?

Please explain.

So we get the double benefits of paying more money for the products we use and get to see Mexico's economy collapse. Why was it that the Mexicans were going north again? Something about no jobs in their country?
If a 20% tax will slowly strangle their economy, let's make it 100%.

Why do you think there is far less attention paid to Canadians entering this country illegally? Do you think it is due to racism or do you think that it might be they pay in more than they take. Illegal immigration costs are a major problem in border states, especially California.
Or we should have the same immigration policies as Canada. That country to the North that Liberals threaten to move to because of Trump building a wall. I really wish that they would move.

All it took for Boilerman to go to the left of Hillary Clinton on trade was to have a Republican tell him it was ok.

I'm loving Trump's protectionism - even if I think it might go to far. The pendulum has gone to far for too long in the wrong direction.

But lets be honest - if a president Bernie Sanders were to utter the word "tariff" .....or demanded companies purchase from US suppliers......or made threats to companies trying to relocate... Boilerman would take pitchforks into the streets.

And that's really the silver lining to having Trump in the White House. Some of his agenda is incredibly leftist - more so than any democrat even. And the most far-right people in his base are tagging along because....well, just because. And I am totally cool with that.

Because Canadians don't come to America to wash dishes for $5/hour.

There's a cost to every human being living in the country - including you and me. Can you show me an economist in California who has concluded the costs of the illegal immigrant population outweigh their economic contribution? cause I cant find one.
PJ, your twisting my words...........either intentionally or unintentionally. I want trade, but only fair trade. I don't want tariffs of any kind. Nor does Trump. We getting screwed, and Trump intends to level the playing field.

1) Mexico trades millions of uneducated poor people from the US for maybe a couple hundred thousand more educated and wealthy Americans in return. It's a shitty and expensive deal for us and great for them. Trump is in a position negotiating power, and Mexico is not. We will eventually get a better deal.

The deal with Asian countries on cars and trucks sucks, although it's moderately better than a decade ago. We're still getting screwed, because no one had the balls to fight for for a fair deal. Bush and Obama were far too weak.

Trump will get better deals than we have today, and we will be rewarded with a thunderous economic recovery. This will cause Liberals to claim that the recovery was all Obama's doing.

I'm sorry, I'd be happy to discuss this, but I'm not sure what you'd like explained?
American companies producing goods in China results in lower costs to Americans. For example- Mattel closes a factory in NJ and moves to China, where they produce 20 million hot wheels. Bad for the thousand folks in Jersey, but good for 250 million Americans as we save money on the toys we buy. Good for Mattel, and Mattels shareholders as they save money and sell more toys.
