We are quickly adopting Italy's system of tax enforcement

Lets incorporate the honor system for people to pay taxes! Looks like a good year for me to write off the private jet I purchased.

Your chances of getting audited are low - and dropping lock a rock.

"Our budget for this fiscal year is about $900 million below 2010. Since 70 percent of our budget is personnel, we have absorbed these cuts mostly by not replacing employees who leave for other jobs, or who retire, like Angelo or Bill. If it’s a critical position, we may shift another employee into that slot. But it’s still a net drop in the size of our workforce. As a result, we expect the IRS workforce to shrink by another 2,000 to 3,000 full-time employees this year. That will add up to about 17,000 full-time employees lost through attrition since 2010."
How about a 100 page tax code, that only requires a few pages to return.

The IRS doesn't pass laws - they just enforce existing ones. They currently have 17,000 fewer people enforcing the tax code than just a few years ago. Raise your hand if you think less tax fraud will be the result.
The 74,000+ page tax code is written by the IRS

With most people e-filing, the service has cut back on agents. It now take an extraordinary amount of time to get to an agent on the phone, and when you do, you pray to God you have a competent one. I have no doubt if current laws were enforced, that billions to tens of billions more could be collected. Unfortunately the liberals will only want to pass more tax increases.
Maybe if the IRS didn't have to deal with the additional 100,000,000 or so 1095-C forms submitted as part of the ACA this year and enforce the individual mandate, they might have enough resources to handle their basic tax collection duties.
An excellent educational video for people like Hoops.

Schoolhouse Rocks! - I'm just a Bill
Here's my question about the IRS. I complete a return with all income and deductions documented by forms required by law (W2, 1099 etc). When I file it, they compare it to information they already have on file (W2, 1099 etc). If I make a mistake vs their existing perfect record, I'm penalized. Why not simply generate a return for me that I can approve or challenge (for example unique deductions documented with receipts) online? Then send me a bill or check. This would ensure fewer errors and many fewer citizens would become criminals for failing to file. It would just be too easy. Oh and many people who are entitled to the EITC would get it too. Etc.

Follow the money.

From wikipedia. There are 74,000 pages of this

Treasury Regulations are the tax regulations issued by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a bureau of the United States Department of the Treasury. These regulations are the Treasury Department’s official interpretations of the Internal Revenue Code and are one source of U.S. federal income tax law.

Section 7805 of the Internal Revenue Code gives the United States Secretary of the Treasury the power to create the necessary rules and regulations for enforcing the Internal Revenue Code
