Oh man, that's the best part. A day on the boat drinking ice cold beer, especially when there's a mate doing all the work for you.

Tut, we went to a place on the southern end of Marathon that cooked up your daily catch. When my wife and I arrived, perused the menu and about to order this super nice couple asked if we wanted some fresh fish. He had been out on his buddys charter boat and they had an ungodly amount of leftover fish so of course we accepted and man was it good. Kinda took me back to my earlier years, fishing all day on the Ches. bay and evouring all the fresh fish that evening. I was the official crab catcher then, I didn't eat(what 8yr old does?)them, but it was always fun catching 'em. Nothing like fresh seafood.

Oh the good old days of crabbing. We used to go out to the pier, at night with chicken necks tied to a rope. When the crabs would come in to munch, my brother would scoop them up in a net.

The first time we did this was back around 1965 when I was eight years old.

We then took them home in old laundry baskets. We put the 100 or so crabs on the back porch for the night. When we woke up the neighborhood looked like a science fiction movie. We didn't realize the crabs could crawl out of the baskets. You should have seen it all up and down our neighbors yards were covered in crabs.

After we rounded up all of the crabs that we could find my mother boiled them for the four of us.

Now if you have never had a blue crab let me tell you the meat is delicious but it is a lot of work for a very little bit of meat. Three of us just dug in cracking, chewing, picking and sucking for any little bit of meat we could find........except one, my older brother. He had the patience and bright idea of picking and saving all of his meat in a bowl.......Big mistake when he was done picking and he left his bowl to go get a drink.

Boy was he pissed off when he returned to an empty bowl after picking for a good hour or so.

That brother died unexpectedly last year way to soon....he was only 64. We were going to go fishing but we both agreed we should wait to after his surgery.

He is gone but his memory is always with me.

An ole saying in my home.... "A bad day fishing still beats working."

When you have a captain and crew doing the work, it gets even better. And the results are obvious from your pictures that your crew knew what they were doing, from picking the locations, equipment to use, bait, etc.

And the bait used may be the most important. That may be why it's not a bad thing, when you go fishing, to have a master baiter with you.

HA! Great crab getaway story. My uncle always gave me fish heads for crab bait, they seemed to work and I used the exact same method, pull 'em up on the string and scoop 'em up with the net. Do it too quick and thewy were gone. My uncle would always give me a drink of his beer for catching the crabs, that was a pretty special thing at that time.
Catching saltwater crabs was always fun.
I remember catching the them off a bridge over a river at Cape Cod when I was a kid with my parents.
We would come back back with a couple of dozen each time.
As they say ....................... 'Those were the Good Old Days".

Having a restaurant properly cook recently caught fish is the best. With that being said, I am now the king of smoked salmon, and I love other smoked fish. You should try to smoke some of it some time.
