Welcome to Harry Reid Airport

A bill is being prepared to change the name of McCarran Airport to Harry Reid.
I'm personally opposed to naming airports or much of anything after living people. I think a case could be made to name it after him after he's dead, but no reason to rush.
Pat McCarran is best known outside of Nevada for being Francisco Franco's favorite US Senator and for his work with Joe McCarthy. He also was the inspiration for the corrupt Senator in the God-Father movies

I believe that this nation is the last hope of Western civilization and if this oasis of the world shall be overrun, perverted, contaminated or destroyed, then the last flickering light of humanity will be extinguished. I take no issue with those who would praise the contributions which have been made to our society by people of many races, of varied creeds and colors. America is indeed a joining together of many streams which go to form a mighty river which we call the American way. However, we have in the United States today hard-core, indigestible blocs which have not become integrated into the American way of life, but which, on the contrary are its deadly enemies. Today, as never before, untold millions are storming our gates for admission and those gates are cracking under the strain. The solution of the problems of Europe and Asia will not come through a transplanting of those problems en masse to the United States.... I do not intend to become prophetic, but if the enemies of this legislation succeed in riddling it to pieces, or in amending it. Pat McCarron June 1952

My vote would be for either Howard Hughes or Kirk Kerkorian, based on their ties to both Las Vegas and aviation.
What about Manuel, the omelet guy at the Main Street Station buffet? The guy is a legend.

You mean Mc Carron was the inspiration for Senator Geary in the Godfather? Loved the actor.

Unless it is changing an airport from "O.J. Simpson Airport", I do not believe a name should be replaced. If it is a location like Burbank Airport being renamed to Bob Hope Airport or Orange County Airport being renamed to John Wayne Airport, then I have no problem with it. Most of the world associates Las Vegas with Mc Carran Airport. I think they should let it be. Besides, Harry Reid is hardly an inspirational person to name an airport after.

I can get you a gaming license. The price is $250,000, plus a monthly payment of five percent of the gross of all four hotels. [sneers] Mr. Corl-ee-own-eh.

Because I intend to squeeze you. I don't like your kind of people. I don't like to see you come out to this clean country with your oily hair, dressed up in those silk suits, passing yourselves off as decent Americans. I'll do business with you, but the fact is that I despise your masquerade, the dishonest way you pose yourself. Yourself and your whole f***ing family.

I think I'll try one of those -- red headed Yolandas.
Typically with renamings, they find a way to incorporate the new name with the old name.

Here we have Barry Goldwater Terminal at Sky Harbor Airport, Jim Brock Field at Packard Stadium, Frank Kush Field at Sun Devil Stadium and so forth.

Facilities with sponsorship naming rights are another issue. The Phoenix Suns have played in America West Arena turned US Airways Arena turned Talking Sticks (Casino) Arena.
Harry Reid, that would be a travesty!

If you asked 100 Americans on the street to name the Las Vegas airport, I suspect very few would come up with it. I'm not a Reid fan, and I don't like naming things after living people, but Reid has bought a ton of money and influence to Nevada. More importantly, he kept Yucca Mountain from happing.
