Western Casino Closing after 41 years

this is very sad news I love the western it has that old vegas feel. I cant beleive they are closing they just cleaned the place up. When I walked in their in May I was suprised how good the place looked. I had the best time playing blackjack and craps and thought it was funny when I ordered a beer they gave you a can. The low table limits and fun dealers made that place. sorry it has to close.
The US casino business just seems like a bad business to be in now days , just too many casinos everywhere now. Check out the bond yields on many of the casinos they seem very high
i went here one time with my sister. the walk didnt scare me, but then again, neither does my own shadow.

my sister has no clue how to play video poker, but after watching me win on it, she wanted to try it. i suggested she try playing pennies. she got dealt aces with a kicker on tdb - which got her $40. she absolutely did not understand how big of a deal this hand was and dismissed it as 'boring, i only won $40"

when we went to cash out (i think the machine paid her in nickels), there was a crackhead type of person on line in front of us at the cashier. im not sure what aggrivated this person, but she began throwing quarters at the cashier.

ahhhhhh memories.

ill definitely make a stop there during my december trip.
There is a saying....if you want to look thin then you should hang around fat people.

I apply this sentiment at the Western. If you want to look like a high roller then hang out with a bunch of gambling-addict-penny-playing railroad bums.

The present ownership only bought the place a few years ago. It used to be part of the Jackie G mini-empire until he sold off everything but the El Cortez a couple of years ago.. These guys bought at the height of the Vegas real estate market and are far underwater on their finances. The only reason they were able to redo the Plaza was that they got the furnishings for pennies on the dollar from the Fountainbleu bankruptcy.
While I have never been to the Western I do think it's sad that there is less and less of the old Las Vegas traditions, sights, fun, and bargains around these days. I miss the old Las Vegas.
Made the walk to the Western one night from the El Cortez. As my friend and I approached the Western, noticed a squad car parked outside. Just as we were about to open the doors, out came 2 officers with a perp in handcuffs. That's always a good sign you are in a classy joint !

Inside, the place was filthy. The hardwood/plank flooring was very worn, all the slots were old and dirty, and some loser degenerate at the bar started yelling at us. Played some decent rules $3 bj, had a couple of those 16oz Coors Lights in plastic cups, made a quick profit, and left after an hour or so.

It's worth a laugh or two if you are in a group.
Too bad the paper doesn't let you know any of this stuff Bill, only the fact of them not making any money ever, as you read it , kind of pisses me off.

Jackie G's staff tried to convince him for years toshut down the Western because of its non-profitability but he didn't want to lay off the workers.

I believe one of the reasons it has always remained open regardless of ownership is that it served as a good training ground for new dealers that would be moved to the higher-end properties once their skills were up to speed.
