What do you do if there is a slot card already in a machine you sit down to play?

If there are no credits, I place it on top of the machine and start playing.

In more ways than one.

If I find someone's slot card already in a machine, I pull it out and start loudly calling their name...If they come back I give it to them. I'll also loudly ask people as they walk by if they are 'Your name here'. When security inevitably shows up I hand it to them and say "I found this in the machine".
I don't play many machines, usually just my free play and maybe a little bit more. I leave my card in all the time and it seems like 90% of the time if I go back to the machine I left it at, it's not there. I ask the ppl around and hardly ever get a response. Do they think I'm scamming them in some strange way? lol
Some slot players are kind of on the rude side.

(I confess: I once played $350 left in a slot machine. I'm bad. I'm bad. I'm bad.)

I should have mentioned that in my post, thanks for bringing it up.

I live in Vancouver, BC. At the local casinos (run/mandated by the provincial government) is the way they do things. Any monies not claimed after 30 days, will go to charity.

So, that being said, if one finds money in a machine or on the gaming floor and takes it, that is considered theft and will result in a barring from gaming establishments. If you turn it in, the casino will take your name and information and it will be up to the 'finder' to make the claim after 30 days. But yes, in a sense, money belongs to the Casino. Not 'finders, keepers.' it can get confusing, for sure. They way I look at it is: if I'm walking through a casino and see $100 on the floor, that's theft if I take it, it might be mine after 30 days or the original owner might get it back... Besides, Karma is a bitch. I try to do what I would want someone to do if I lost something...

As for the $350 you found in a machine, at least you feel bad and knew it was wrong... LOL! Last time I was in Vegas, outside a coffee/gift shop in Bellagio I saw a Canon EOS Mark III just sitting on a table. I was initially thinking of scooping it, but then I looked through the pictures on it. So, I went to the gift shop, asked for a piece of paper and felt pen, wrote my name, phone number and email address on it. I then had my fiancé take my picture with that camera. I then turned it in to security. Got an email a month later with a nice 'thank you'

Card goes on the top and I play. If there is credit on it and its under $5 I'll play it. But if significant I play the next machine. If no one comes by in the next 10 minutes, its mine to play. Actually, I very seldom check to see if there are credits, I just put money in and start to play (and then am surprised when my money last so long!).
Take the card out of the machine and insert yours. What else can you do.?
No use to give it to the Players Club. They'll just pitch it.
In the casino where I work, people will often hand it to me, like they've done their good deed for the day or something. Nothing against them, they're just doing what they think is right. But I'll just lay it between a couple machines. You're much better off to just lay it in the tray or on top or around the machine, so the person has a chance to come back and get it.
Of course, if I found a slot club card that said "Elvis Presley" or "Frank Sinatra" I would put it in my pocket, race home, and put it up for sale on eBay.
