And yet somehow, it's even better than that sounds. And all for a good cause.

Very cool! I will be looking for the 2015 edition of this. AND its tax deductible!

Nashville Unplugged at Sunset Station in Henderson is worth the drive even if you don't like country music. A couple of very talented and funny musicians talk and perform with different guest songwriters each week about their craft and their experiences. The songwriters always perform a few of their own songs, and it's a kick to hear them describe how their songs were inspired - one guy credited a Maury Povich show - or how they promoted songs by driving from radio station to radio station, or about how they added raunchy lyrics to one of their a songs, and so on.

It's usually country oriented, but in about a month, Jim Peterik, one of the founders of Survivor, will be there. He wrote "Eye of the Tiger" among other stuff. All for $5.00, in a nice room with reasonable drink prices, every Friday night at 8 PM.

Hi,
These are great places, some of which have been mentioned by other people.

Hemenway Park in Boulder City- I always hope to see the bighorn sheep, rabbits and roadrunners that come down from the hills to graze on green grass at the park.

Red Rock Canyon scenic drive- this is beautiful in the morning and there are many places to hike or just pull over and enjoy the scenery.

Aloha,
Jennifer

Early in the mornings seems the best time to see the sheep. There also seem to be more in the fall months than any other time of year.
And be sure to tell any little ones you might have with you that those are NOT chocolate candies all over the ground.

The sheep are more prevalent at Hemenway in the hotter months of spring and summer when they come down in search of water and relief from the heat. They walk through the local neighborhood to get to the park. It may be on the only place in the world where bighorn sheep will let you get within a few feet of them in the wild.

Agree that Nashville Unplugged is a good deal at $5. I wish it was still at Red Rock.

My favorite way to see the bighorns is to paddle right up to them. My hidden gem is kayaking out of Willow Beach, AZ, just an hour from the Strip. If you don't have your own, kayaks can be rented for $10 per hour. Even better, hire an outfitter (like Desert Adventures) to cart you down to the bottom of the dam just below the bridge. It's $60 for the day including kayak rental, plus $17 to the Feds for the permit. Then it's an easy 12 miles of flatwater down Blackwater Canyon, including hot springs, a 130 degree steam cave, historical remnants from the dam's construction, and if you're lucky, a few critters. Guided tours might be a better choice for some, because the unguided rentals are "paddle or perish."

I could have gotten even closer for this shot, except that the chihuahua on my bow was getting ready to launch herself into the water.

On the other hand, these guys don't let you get very close at all. And yes, he was peeing in the river.

That's way cool Forkie, great "hidden gem" Vegas adventure.
DonDiego's Hidden Gem is the Lady Luck Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

Why they pick one up at the airport in their own shuttle bus for free, . . . and return one for free as well. Or there's a nice parking garage right across the street. And poor old DonDiego can get a pleasant Garden Room for less than $20, . . . or even free sometimes, . . . and never a resort fee, . . . all just one block from Fremont Street.

There's a decent gourmet steak restaurant right on the premises all dark reds and carmines.

And they've got fine single, double, and 6-deck games with a $5-minimum. Some full-pay Jacks-or-Better machines too! They run decent medium-sized blackjack tournaments, . . . and other things like a Kentucky Derby Tournament one year where DonDiego came in second. And even a little Leroy's Sports Book on the way to the rooms.

Or, . . . at least, . . . that's the way it used to be.
One shining moment...

My early vote for Thread of the Year. Good concept Rock'n Rick

My best and funniest hooker story took place at the Lady Luck.
