What would you do?

Last Monday my wife and I were walking through Paris on our way out for breakfast. My wife spotted a chip on the floor so she picked it up and handed it to me thinking it was a dollar chip. I was looking at it as I walked out the door and saw that it wasn't a dollar chip but was a $1000 chip. We talked a long time about it and decided the right thing to do was to turn it in and hope the person that lost it would claim it. We went back to Paris and met with security to fill out some forms and turn it in. We actually ended up having our first ever winning trip. Good karma I guess! What would you have done?
I would have done the same thing. Besides being morally right, $1,000 chips are tracked and you will not be able to cash or play it.

The casino should have comped you something for doing the right thing. Did they?

Congrats on a winning trip.
We kind of thought they would. They did ask what room we were in but the room was already free and we never heard from them again. I knew the chips were tracked but we wouldn't have kept it either way.
$25 I'd cash it. (And have). $100 I'd cash it. $1000... Hmmm. That is tough. That is a bit much for finders keepers.

I'm not the moral police. If I had a reasonable hope that the casino would return the $1000 to the person that lost it, I'd be more inclined to turn it in but the pessimist thinks the casino would just keep it.

I'd probably just keep it. Not turn it in or cash it.

How does a casino track all theirchips? I mean I understand if you've only been playing red chips, but if you play more than that and walked up to a table with a pocketful of chips how could they possibly know one of them was "found"?

BTW I do understand that higher denoms have a microchip in them, but I thought that was only to curtail counterfeiters.

Not all chips are tracked, I didn't say that.
If the chip does not have an RFID, you can bet that the casino knows where every $1,000 is.

Yup, .................... and they knew that this $1,000 Chip was on the floor

I have to put my faith that the casino would do the right thing maybe??? I would not cash it NO for sure??? Expect something comped yes---if the room was comped maybe even a line pass and 2 buffets would not out of the question??? Bad Karma----yes for person who lost it---Good Karma----being you felt you did the right thing. No harm no foul I guess. However let's say the chips are not tracked. Now would the average person turn it in---guess this is where being morally right would enter the picture.
According to the gaming board it is finders keepers but the rules vary casino by casino. If the casino requires you to turn it in and nobody claims it, it should be returned to the finder.

This is covered in the FAQ's here on this site https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/faq.cfm#10

The gaming control board actually mentions the 'law of finders keepers'. I knew it was a law.
