This is a story of a jackpot that SHOULD have been won.....TWICE!!!
I was at the old Marina Hotel on one of those up and backs out of LAX. You had to gamble $5 min and $10 average bets for 4 hours playing BJ. I hardly played any VP at the time so I just concentrated on BJ.
About an hour into my session, there was a bunch of noise coming from the slot section in the casino behind the black jack tables. Well, the screaming got louder and louder, and I just had to get up and see what was going on! When I got there, there was a man that was doing all the screaming being held back by two security guards with a woman cowering in fear about 10 feet from him. I took it that they were husband and wife. Well this guy was soooo worked up, you could barely distinguish what he was saying, but I could definitely here the word "JACKPOT!" I finally glanced up at the machine they were arguing about and saw that the jackpot symbols all seemed to be lined up properly......but.....there was only one coin inserted instead of the 3 coins needed for the top jackpot. Well, at least they won something like $2500, but the top jackpot was over $100,000. Things finally settled down and I went back to playing BJ, and as I walked back to my table..I could hear the guy repeating over and over that she MUST play 3 coins in.
It couldn't have been more than 20 minutes later that the same commotion was coming from the same sot machine.....only this time it was really intense!! I had to run over and see what happened this time. By the time I got there, 4 security guards had a hold of this guy and this time he looked like he was ready to kill someone! The woman was balling her eyes out and was hysterical. In those days, you played with rolls of quarters and dollars. Apparently, the woman was playing 3 coins like her old man had told her, but after playing 18 coins, she didn't bother to open another roll...remember, they had just won $2500....and inserted the last two coins from the roll and VOILA.....she hit the damn jackpot AGAIN! I thought the husband was going to have a massive heart attack right then and there...even though they won about $5000 more. But I guess they really needed some decent money to get them out of a deep hole, and $100,000 would have put them on easy street for a long time! I'll never forget that day!
