When your objective is to play for "score" or "ranking"

Here are some specific numbers that I am fairly sure to be correct. In hands that have both a Jack and a low pair, your long term expectation in 9/6 JoB if you hold the pair is about 82% return of the money you played in. The expected return when holding the Jack is about 49%.

Compressing the long term into segments of $100 coin-in (80 hands of quarter single play), the low pair should yield $82; the Jack $49. That's 66 hands of play vs. 39...a difference of 27 hands.

So for every eighty times you get this type of hand, holding the pair results in 27 more hands of future play than holding the Jack. Which can be used to pursue tier points.

What makes this intriguing is that the goal isn't to make money (granted, I'm sure he would prefer winning over losing) but to mitigate as much risk in order to earn points.
It's amazing how much risk you can mitigate by tossing dollars into a lit furnace. Perfect risk mitigation.

there is nothing wrong with that when you are not a professional gambler. this is called "taking your shot" and there is nothing wrong with "taking your shot."

every time I go to a casino I always put $20 into Megabucks. I always take my shot.

Every trip to Vegas I put $20 into a $5 slot for the same reason. I pick the slot with the smallest jackpot on the theory that it will have less volatility and better odds that I'll walk away with a small jackpot rather than nothing.

Nothing wrong with that strategy either, KayPea. Take your shot.
Same thing with me, I play the side bets and the horn & hard ways. I want that short visit with the big win.
I have never played for comps or rating and seem to get all the comps I want.
one reason why my friend and I got into the discussion that started this thread is that he plays craps... and feels he was never properly rated for craps play. I feel the same way. with all table games vs machine plays the table player is literraly at the mercy of the floorman who records bets and tracks play and may or may not accurately post your "action." Ive had a few weekends when my craps play was almost virtually ignored probably because a floorman failed to push the right button or failed to write down something on a rating card. my friends goal was to play a "machine game" that would give him the best chance to get tier score in addition to his craps action.

I know many table players who feel as I do-- that ratings at tables always fail to measure up to the money at risk or the money played. and if you look at the "rules" on the Harrahs/Caesars website they even have a disclaimer that ratings at table games may not be accurate.

I always talk to the floor while at tables and ask what they are rating me at. Then will ask my time when I leave.
IMO,all table players should be doing the same.
chipchik, even if you ask / know what they are rating you at... how many Tier Points do you get per $? They could tell you what ever you want to hear, but what are you going to get?

You know when you put in 100 plays on $5 VP machine you are going to put $2,500 through a VP machine and put on 250 Base / Tier Points.

If you bet $25 per hand playing Black Jack, how many points do you get? You simply don't know...
As I said before I do not care about going for comps. I give enough play to have not payed for a room in 15 years at a casino.
If they are rating me at what I know I played, I see no issue. I am not sure why you do or am I reading you wrong?
