Why even bother with Vegas anymore?

there are many other places you can go to gamble, and many of them have better gambling. But there is no place quite like Vegas. If your only interest in going to Vegas is going to Sam's Town to play 9/6 Jacks or Better for hours and hours and hours and hours, yeah, I can see why the travel expenses would make it not worth it.

But if your primary purpose for going to Vegas is to stay at a lovely resort, eat at world class restaurants, see some shows, and hang out with some of your friends from all over the place who also love Vegas, then Vegas is really the best place to do all that

And, what she said!
We can find all the things mentioned above in AC. And not there for a Sams Town type experience Not that Vegas doesn't offer more. We just have a good time no matter where we go.
The beach in the summer is hard to beat.
Take your pick.

Current number of licensed gambling places in Las Vegas 1701
Number of slot machines in the city 197,144
Annual visitors to Las Vegas, in millions 36.7

I guess 36 million visitors agree that Vegas is the place to go to gamble. (As well as do other things.
What Rock'n Rick said! Vegas is a 5 hour plane ride and Foxwoods is a 2 hour drive for me- yes, Foxwoods and the Sun are big with lots of doing, seeing and dining options-- but they ain't Vegas, Baby!

Well said

Gambling is more fun in Vegas. They have casinos here in Indiana and some of them have really good games....but its a much more dry experience. There's more energy in Vegas. Maybe thats because people have a "vacation" mentality as oppossed to "just going to kill a few hours" mentality

....or maybe Indiana just has too many boring people.
Vegas is still the best time you can have and if you are diligent about checking airfares and have several months to plan, it's still a bargain. At least we think so. I agree with previous posters about going in warmer weather when you can lay by a lovely pool in the morning. We have loads of casinos in Michigan, but none of them give you free drinks while playing. With a couple coupons in hand, you can eat like a king for far less than you can make it at home. And the shows are the best. I hope we can continue to go to Vegas for a long, long time.

I think the vacation mentality is the correct answer. I hit a casino today around 1pm. Parx. It was pretty crowded for a Tuesday at 1pm. But, just didn't the fun vibe. Mostly unemployed and retired folks.
We visit Las Vegas 6 times a year every year (since 1999) and with the air being over $800 for 2 out of Pittsburgh other places are starting to look more attractive. For many years it was Las vegas and only Las Vegas but with everything increasing a place closer to home may just be the answer. We just had some friends spend 5 days over in AC and they said their prices had also taken a rise. They said they had a great time without the cost of air. Gas, groceries, utilities, and everything else has really increased and it has effected the spendable income on so many Las Vegas will see the effects in the near future more so than what they have seen already. People will seek out bargains and find other places to gamble. Still Las Vegas has it thing of beauty and excitement and it will be hard press to replace.
With airfares going up and up and up the Casinos in Vegas are going to have to do something more to get the $$$ back. I know I'm going to Lincoln City, Oregon more and Vegas/Laughlin is getting less and less of my gambling dollar because Lincoln City is more affordable and offer Vegas style gaming and its right on the ocean.
