why so much negativity towards the locals casinos?

I stay on the strip, go to the shows, but gamble very little there (and I still get good room rates). I do most of my gambling off strip. Overall service is better, better playing opportunities & the food is pretty good.

Would consider staying at RR, M, and GVR, but have not yet.
Karen, have you ever stayed at Red Rock?

Until a couple years ago, I always flew to Vegas and stayed 1 to 3 nights on the strip. Now that I drive, I try to visit new places and see Vegas from the eyes of a tourist. By tourist, I mean someone who visits for a week or more and sees Vegas as a destination instead of a quick 1-3 night get-a-way from home.

The eye opener for me was the day I shared a cab with someone back to the airport. This person was from the East coast and was picking up a rental car. During his 2 week vacation he planned to drive to Scottsdale, San Diego, points in between then back to Vegas.

I also enjoy staying on the strip, hanging out with friends, getting my drink on and being accused of being a "bad influence."
hoops2, Red Rock has super comfy beds and the hotel is top quality.

I've been to Red Rock, but haven't actually stayed there. I know some people see some of the nicer resorts off strip as a stand alone vacation destination and will go to Red Rock or GVR or M and stay put for the whole trip. I just can't see myself doing that. And I drink too much in Vegas to rent a car

and you are a bad influence.

You would like the rooms at RR and they serve bubbly in the casino.

since most people have casinos closer to their home now, why in the world would anyone fly to Vegas just to go to the locals casinos? I have been to some of them, Sams Town, Orleans, M, Red Rock, Silverton..I can get the same experience spending about $10 in gas round trip.

Most places don't have casinos and experiences that even come close to Vegas! For the most part Vegas has better weather, more games, better odds, more casinos, more attractions, better hotels for the prices, bigger selection of food, better entertainment, etc etc.... Most casinos outside of Vegas don't offer free alcohol to those who gamble either for those that like to drink.

that has not been my experience at all. I think some Indian casinos don't, but I thought the booze flowed freely pretty much everywhere else.

I also don't agree that Las Vegas for the most part has better games than anywhere else.

my point is that if it wasn't for all the stuff the strip has to offer, and downtown to a lesser extent, I would never pay the expense of flying to Vegas when I can get the same experience at home as I can at most of the locals casinos in Vegas.

I can play 9/6 JoB or $5 BJ or $5 craps here at home all day long AND get free booze if I want to.

also, most of the stuff you mentioned vegas having more of, attractions, entertainment, food, is really pretty much on the strip.
Karen, you need to get off the strip more. There are plenty of nice places with their own attractions off strip.

As far as local casinos, maybe they are good in your area, but they aren't great everywhere. I guess you are just lucky, you have the best of both worlds.

I never stay on the strip when I go to Vegas, I much prefer the more laid back atmosphere at places like the M and Orleans. But, I always rent a car and get around to a lot of places while I am there. I don't get my drink on until I am back at the place I am staying.

That's just not true at all. AC, Biloxi, Foxwoods, Mohegan, even Pennsylvania, not to mention Reno, Laughlin and Tahoe all have free booooooze-or I would never go there.
