why so much negativity towards the locals casinos?

Karen,

I think if I lived close to Tunica as you do or down the coast, I would agree with your sentiments. However, despite the proliferation of casino gambling in more areas around the country, the lack of competition makes most of these markets lame.

For example, we live close to the Hard Rock in Tampa.....a similar $10 in gas ride from home that you describe. There are a few playing games but still negative expectation. The mailers (in our limited experience) were weak at best. The term "discretionary comp" is like speaking Latin to a host. The free room offers are great but we have never found once where we could use these on a day that we wanted to (weekday or weekend....it didn't matter). So, for us, despite a 4 1/2 hour $300+ RT flight, Vegas is worth it.

Debating the virtues of Strip vs. local experience is highly dependent upon your expectations. There are local properties that really limit their marketing strictly to locals. There are also some local properties (RR, GVR, Palms, M, et. al.) that like to try to be all things to all people. I would be perfectly happy spending 3 days at any of these places as a stand alone destination. It also depends on the quality of gambling experience you prefer.....some view gambling as an entertainment expense whereas others view it as a means to supplement their income.

There are no right or wrong answers....you'll find people who see the virtue in each of these types of places. In addition, you'll find people who'll find "fault" with even the "nicest" property. I used to think that these people were out to lunch but now I realize that it's simply a matter of different strokes....that's why all of these properties are able to exist.

that has not been my experience at all. I think some Indian casinos don't, but I thought the booze flowed freely pretty much everywhere else.

I also don't agree that Las Vegas for the most part has better games than anywhere else.

my point is that if it wasn't for all the stuff the strip has to offer, and downtown to a lesser extent, I would never pay the expense of flying to Vegas when I can get the same experience at home as I can at most of the locals casinos in Vegas.

I can play 9/6 JoB or $5 BJ or $5 craps here at home all day long AND get free booze if I want to.

You must realize that a lot of people don't have those same chances that you say you have. Most people can't go to their local casino and play cheap blackjack at good odds, eat at fairly inexpensive restaurants for a casino, and still get free booze. Most simply like to just get away from reality which is one of the biggest reasons to get away. Several states also offer little options for casinos. Even where you go there is no comparison to the amount of casinos there are in Vegas not to mention Vegas casinos have sportsbooks for those who like to do that.

That's just not true at all. AC, Biloxi, Foxwoods, Mohegan, even Pennsylvania, not to mention Reno, Laughlin and Tahoe all have free booooooze-or I would never go there.

Which is a small amount when compared to all the casinos that don't offer it or aren't allowed to offer it outside the Vegas area. Ohio (when done building), Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Kansas all don't offer it at all. Even in Michigaan, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Iowa where casinos are allowed to give away free alcohol the majority of them don't offer free alcohol. Get out of the Vegas, AC, and Biloxi areas and it's not common to find free alcohol.
I would figure that the locals want a casino that gives them good offers and offers better play than the strip or downtown. I mean here is their bread and butter, these are the folks that keep you going when the tourists are gone.

I loved Sams, its out and away and not crowded (except starting on Thursday for the check cashers). It's a great value for the money, not too far away from the strip and downtown.

It's great being able to have a big selection of casinos to go to that aren't usually busy. I can really appreciate that and the level of customer service they provide at local casinos in Vegas. It puts any Detroit casino to shame.

Are these TN casinos? Which ones? I may want to hit them up for a weekend getaway sometime. How are the room rates?

For me, Vegas is the choice because anything close to me is hours away with no competition, lousy paytables and minimums, poor drink selection and service, and high rates. Once I'm in Vegas I like the off strip properties for the better paytables, lower table minimums, better drink selection, better rates including comps, and just easier to get into and out of due to smaller size and reduced traffic. I suspect these are the same reasons the locals like these casinos.

If I'm a regular and have been patronizing a business for years, then I'm naturally going to be a bit upset when they tighten up on their offers to a loyal customer. I may understand the reasoning, but I'm still going to feel hurt and rejected.
I don't believe there are any casinos in Tennessee. I believe one would have to drive to a neighboring state that has casinos.
I am on the TN/MS border. There are no casinos in the state of Tennessee

Tennessee has no casinos and no football team? What does it actually have to offer?
