A herd of bighorns apparently hangs out a lot at Hemmenway Park, a small park about two miles from downtown Boulder City just off the 93. I counted about 50 sheep on Saturday, and most were visible as soon as I got out of my car. I was told the best time to see them was on warm afternoons, which is how I timed my visit, but others have said they see the bighorns just about every time they go.
They walk around the park like they own the place, including through the children's playground. I got up to within about 10 yards of a couple of big males with full curl horns, and when one of them eyeballed me I just sat down in the grass and he chilled. If that isn't close enough for you a park ranger told me the best thing is to is to picnic nearby and eventually some will walk past within just a few feet. Later in the year is when bighorn males are known to be ramming into each other, and I should have asked him about whether that happens at park. No feeding or dogs are allowed.
Anyway, I used to get excited when I saw a lone bighorn at Willow Beach from a couple hundred yards away, but this is much better. I can' imagine visiting anything in the Boulder City area without stopping by.
