Your giving them props for failing?

Nope. I'm giving them props for trying. I've followed my own path against the advice of others. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. I don't fault anyone for giving it a go.

The thing is, you didn't move to a town with no discernable skills and a "true" unemployment rate that matches the unemployment rate of the 1930's.
If he hadn't tried, he'd never know what he missed and what might have been possible. That's a tough thing to live with...at 35, failing may be easier than a life of "what if". k

I didn't say he was smart. I gave him credit for trying. It didn't kill him. He could have only lost his thousand buck stake. Maybe he learned some lessons or is a better person for the experience. Sheesh...what about the pioneers or the pilgrims? I'm sure others thought they were nuts too.
I went back to one of the old threads from July and found what I posted back then:

All joking aside, if you're broke & have nothing to lose, and have a back-up plan in place for when the fit hits the shan, go for it. Just realize you may be coming back home to no job, no place to stay and no woman. But at least you'll have a story and not spend your life wondering, "what if." Every decision in life has rewards & consequences.... it's up to you to decide what you stand to gain and what you stand to lose.

Failing this venture may be the best thing that ever happened to him... you never know what's around the corner. As my dad always says when I do something that doesn't work out... "At least you got educated."

I have more respect for someone who tries and fails than for someone who points and laughs.

But that's life. Funny as it may seem...

I still want to know how you "know" they failed. Are you just assuming it, since he hasn't posted here lately?

The colonel is not assuming.

A little research can get you a lot of information, that is, if you really care to find out.

I think I saw those two on Tropicana with a sign that said "Vietnam Vet, need gas money to get outta town.....god bless"

I agree with that most of the time.

But what was possible in his situation?

Moving to a city on the verge of bankruptcy and waiting tables at a no name restaurant didn't offer much of a future.

Had this been 3 or 4 years ago they might have stood a chance.

I agree with this statement 100%!

All the folks that have said that they themselves "TOOK THE RISK" and moved down here, then they go on to say it was 20 years ago, or even 6 years ago.

The economy wasn't so bad back then...I took the risk 7 years ago, and things worked out ok...that is not the point.

Back then there were jobs to be had, plenty of construction going on, and Vegas was booming. Even with all the promise of good fortune and jobs a- plenty, I had a back out plan, because you never know.

My folks lived in Vegas and if things went wrong, I could have bunked with them until things got better.

He chose the worst time ever to move to Vegas, had very little money, was going to a shitty job, and didn't know anyone out here that could bail him out.

He and I communicated in PM's and I told him that I would buy both of them a fancy steak dinner at T-bones on their one year anniversary of living in Vegas...if they made it that long.

I wished him the best and I hoped that he would be one of the very select few that make it.

I personally don't give two shits about this guy, but I did offer my advice and he chose to ignore it. The only reason I am still on this thread, is to call out all them punks who told him I was full of shit and that he shouldn't pay me no mind! I won't ever take any advice from them fuckin people...they would be the kind of person that would tell a fall down drunk, that he "looked ok" to drive home by himself!

As long as its not them riding in the car with them...they don't give a shit what happens to other people! Fuck'em!
